Does IDSA make conference videos available online?

As the subject says… I was looking for video from the Midwestern conference, but can’t seem to find anything.

Yes IDSA will, it just takes some time to do the video editing and getting them posted up.

Will they post all of them? I have asked this question before and have gotten the same answer as above. The problem is they either took months, and I mean many months, or they just weren’t posted at all.

It would be great to see not only the conf but the other workshops hosted.

Great. I look forward to this. Will these be on the IDSA site or Youtube? If you find out they are released, please reply to this post.

Yeah timing is a bit off, but we are working to speed things up on that.
This year IDSA hired film crews to film the speakers and to do the editings and all that jazz to get them ready for primetime on the site.
As far as all of the speakers being recored, I know for the south, we only recorded the speakers in the main room, but we will have all the presentations up on the site.

just to revisit this… where will these videos be available once edited? I see there are a few videos on the IDSA website under “explore” but there seems to be no organizational system.

At the risk of sounding condescending, do you guys need help editing video? It doesn’t seem like you need to do to much since the presentations are linear. …just cut em out, top and tail and maybe normalize the audio. I could probably knock out a few a day, even with work and school.

As far as lending a hand you’d have to talk to Tim Akins at National about that. Not to sound condescending back…there is just a little more then cutting them up, and normalizing the audio and tossing them up on the site. But I’m sure Tim could give you the run down of what needs to be done and if there is something you can help with like I said…he’d be the guy to talk too.

Where they will be once they are up on the site. There has been ALOT of talk over the year of where they should be.

If you scroll down on the home page of IDSA, you’ll see a video gallery link. In there you’ll find a bunch of vids from previous years. I agree they are a bit all over the place with organization.
Another place is under the explore tab like you mentioned…again these are in no real understandable order.

My thoughts and these are only mine and I don’t know how easy it would be for our current site, but I would like to see the videos for each conference under a conference tab.
So for my conference, Southern, there would be a tab on the main page or somewhere easy to find, and then the conference year and the speakers and a quick summary of their talk.
Make sense?

I’m very open to suggestions, so if you have any please let me know. I am more than happy to pass members thoughts along to the rest of the board.

They also have to edit out the streaker from the one video.

hmm… I guess what I meant to say is that anything more than basic processing and putting them on youtube isn’t necessary; especially if it’s holding up the flow of information.

This is wandering off topic, but this was my first IDSA conference. I’m not a member, and I don’t see much value in being one. I heard several casual discussions by attendees about why it wasn’t worth being a member. I honestly didn’t think the conference was worth the admission price. It was basically a live version of watching TED talks on youtube, except I can’t go back and rewatch them or share them because the IDSA is taking so long to do whatever they are doing to edit the video. This isn’t an angry rant. I wanted to see what it was all about, and my admission price was the cost of that research. What I’d like to see is the IDSA actually be relevant, and be worth being a member of. My personal opinion is that the questionable website design and slowness / lack of media are prime factors in the failure to make the organization valuable.

The conference tab idea would be great. Especially if all video content that is posted comes from conferences. Nice hierarchy. It would also be awesome if there was plenty of meta for each talk so it was searchable.

Is there a reason that a youtube, etc channel hasn’t been considered? IP issues with the speakers? If the mission statement of the organization is to disseminate info about ID to people who may not know, wouldn’t it make more sense to put it somewhere where it can be easily searched and allow for self-discovery by non-ID folks?

Yeah, we’ve talked about putting the videos up on YouTube a couple of times like TED does, but we always go back to the same thing which is what you kind of hit on earlier, " I’m not a member, and I don’t see much value in being one. I heard several casual discussions by attendees about why it wasn’t worth being a member.. We want to make your $375 has a value to it, besides giving you great networking oppurtunities, (which by the way you don’t get form watching a TED talk online).

One of the ideas we have had in the past, is put the videos up on the IDSA.org site behind a log in so only members would be able to view them. Obviously we’d want to leave a couple out in the front of the log in for Designers who aren’t members and want to see what IDSA has to offer them, and for people who want to know more just about Industrial Design. But now you start getting a value for your membership.

“My personal opinion is that the questionable website design and slowness / lack of media are prime factors in the failure to make the organization valuabe.” You won’t hear any arguement from me on this, or from alot of other IDSA people, but I don’t really want to turn this in to a bash the IDSA website. Trust me every complaint people have about the site, the board knows of and are putting plans in place to fix the site. But it takes time (I know that excuse is starting to wear thin), but it really does.

Sorry all I am reading here is excuses. And I am not attacking you CParke but the organization. I renewed my membership this year but waited until feb/march. I don’t know if I will do the same next year. To the OP’s point, videos on Youtube make my $375 worth something. It is educating the world on ID. Do you think TED has the same thoughts as IDSA on this?

I have said it plenty of times…until you guys start being relevant there will be no IDSA 10 years from now.
