yes, yes, yet another post on pens...

i can not remember if this topic was discussed,

wondering if anyone knows of pens that do not get smeared by markers? i, by shear chance, came across these two pens that happened to be laying around in our house were really good for sketching and did not smear when i applied markers over them…hoping people know of others?

the one on the top is a micron uniball signo? and though it worked pretty well over thin lines due to its thin line wdith, it did smuge if there where multiple passes

the one on the bottom is a bic z4 roller? .7mm and i could it did not smudge at all, no matter how i blotched the ink…

Pilot Razor points don’t get smeared by Chartpak aD markers.
that’s the combo I use.

I’ve never used Prisma or Copics though, so I’m not sure if the Razor points will work for you…

I like the Extra Fine V Razor Point, it’s basically a felt-tip version of my favorite ballpoint, the Precise V5…

V Razor Point: the tip lasts longer than the regular Razor point, and it seems to have a wider range of line weight

Chartpak aD

regular razor point

chartpak marker in my experience go well over anything, they just a tad bit too juicy sometimes…

those pens look expensive are they?

The standard razor points are CHEAP, our office buys them by the box, but I think at the local art store they’re like $.89 a pop, I’m sure they’re cheaper in bigger quantity. the V-Razor is something like $7 for a 5 pack I think, you can get the these ones at Office Depot (though I tried to get them yesterday and OD didn’t have them)

Chartpak has smeared a few for me:
Bic ball-points (the super cheap ones)
Sharpie markers
and the copy machine ink

I like em’ juicy, but I also really like em’ when they die (especially blue for reflection and chrome) I have 7 markers up-side down on my desk right now. I’ve been sketching raw with them lately, it’s fun! and it speeds things up. I need to buy some new markers, I pretty much never throw them out, and now all I have is dead ones

really? i use the cheap bics almost exclusively and the chartpaks seem to go well over everything…better than anything else

Doug Chiang use that technique, man that guy is good! it is sweet if you can pull if off

I was using this super cheap Bic, I had bought a bunch of these in blue. Also I was using an aD marker color that I never used again (some wierd blue). Maybe it was just that particular color, it seemed to act differently as I remember…(blue glow maybe I dunno)

starting sketches with the aD marker is awesome, I’m using Ice Blue, Mint, or cool grey #1.

The other day I went so far as to do all the lines (including shadow hatches) and then thicken up the outer lines a bit more with just the Mint marker, and the sketch looked really cool, very Muted and Subtle. I played around a bit with that sketch in PS but couldn’t get it to a point where the Chinese would understand everything easily (we usually only send them B&W). It looked cool to me though…

the chartpak are too juicy for me to sketch with but are sweet for adding a lil’ splash of color

Keep in mind, I’m “sketching” with a pretty dead marker, I’d have to sketch pretty big if I were using a fresh and juicy one… Aaa I love the markers!!

Brother! I still have some markers from college days 24 years ago. In my opinion, a marker only gets good after about 8-10 years old… But this is serious… does standing them up-side down speed up their aging? Because my 24 year olds are really on their death bed.

To the original poster: in your pic the pen at the top just showing its cap is a “Faber-Castell Pitt artist pen” - my new favourite as its india ink. But they now also have a line of colored markers compatible with the drawing pens… no smudging.

good eye! i was given that pen and i have not used it much…how much do these run? i like but the brush tip is a lil’ bothersome on rough printer paper, i can hear it cutting against the paper…ouch!

WOW! you’ve got markers as old as me!!! that is sweet!

I stand them up on the caps, to get “some” ink back into the tip. I’ve been using these dead markers all week, and it’s getting to the point where I can’t get anything to show up  this is good for the blue (ends up looking more like a pastel rub “perfect”) but it’s no good for my greys, that I actually need a little color fill from. Going to get more markers tomorrow I guess :unamused:

What markers are you using from 1982??
how does the tip survive?? how do you know what color you’re grabbing (the labels can’t be pretty)
