I am starting a new job search as a result of an unpleasant work environment that has caused massive (50% plus) turnover at the company I have worked at in the year I have been there, and which appears to be the norm for this company. What questions would you ask a prospective employer to get an accurate sense of the work environment? Is it a faux pas to ask, “how many people do you currently employ, and how many people have left your company in the past 5 years?” Share your insights.
you ask a positive question: What is your staff retention rate?
you are also free to ask about the work history for the person previously employed in the role you are inteviewing for. if they have recently been promoted and the HR person elaborates on their work history working up through the company it can be a good sign.
