i am not a photographer by training but in the past have been requested by friends to help with photography at weddings and picnics…these are all for “candid” & “in the moment type” compositions and the results have been good…pple love them…i haven’t charged pple anything and sometimes they just give token amount or gifts…
a friend of a friend saw her wedding pics i took for her earlier this year and asked if i would do the same for her wedding coming up in november…it would be for about 8 hours worth of work in which they will provide film and help rent equipment if i needed anything else…they asked what i would charge…
for a friend i hate charging…but for someone you don’t personally know i’d say $100 at least…considering this seems to be more of a hobby than a main source of income suggest $100
I’d start by looking at their alternatives and end up with something like 1/4-1/2 a professional rate, less the equipment. If they like your work, then they’re getting a bargain.
We hired a very close friend to do our wedding photography (reportage style) and we didn’t get much of a discount… But I’d rather help out a friend than pay a stranger, so I didn’t mind.

If they’re your friends the best way to go is to think about what if it was your cough wedding. Since these are people you feel comfortable around then you’ll feel comfortable getting in their face. It’s hardly work at all. Just imagine what it would be like trying to get those candid photographs of people you don’t know.
Next to the groom and the wedding singer your the kewlest guy there. Maybe some hot mommas there too. ehehe.
I say, think of it as a trade, then make a price from that.
i agree this isn’t exactly “work” but in agreement that for someone i don’t really know, i should charge something…spending my saturday doing this, i was thinking in the range of $200-300?
guess what i will be doing for them is similar to reportage style…they also have someone else do the “posed” shots, so i am not the only photographer…
just curious, cg, what did you guys pay for yours?
