What is BMW doing?

First impression of stance was a panda bear squatting a steamer

I’m not a car designer but …

At least the kidneys are now trending a better direction in terms of size. Let’s give credit where credit is due…

Erik Goplen left BMW, curiously around the same time the Santa Monica studio opened. :flushed:

I saw a new 7 today. It’s was laughable. Trying really hard to be a Rolls.

That is all.

A few years ago I had a nice conversation with one automotive designer. He was sad about general tendency of cars becoming aggressive in their proportions and details. He also mentioned that usually you forced to put that emotion in design to make car stand out. Just like news do.
Where is our Fiat 500’s of the era? Even the Mini’s today are somewhat aggressive.

I believe that held true a few years ago, but now most cars seem to split the each headlight into 2 similar sized units, giving the car’s face 4 eyes instead of 2. This makes them seem less anthropomorphic and perceived as less aggressive, despite having other aggressive features like a huge open mouth full of teeth.

With each new release I feel the one thing designers are being forced to do, is to make the car ugly. There is probably some spreadsheet somewhere, some algorithm data (aka AI if you are reading this is 2024), or some Kaizen Inst. powerpoint being passed around top management on all big brands, stating that if you designed them to be ugly, you get big sales. And the sad news is that judging by BMW sales, they are probably right…

The uglier they make it, the more press it gets.

Finally something more palatable from BMW? It’s very reminiscent of 80’s designs to me, but at least everything flows nicely and doesn’t feel too forced.

yes! I was genuinely surprised to see it

An anomaly, probably a frustrated intern gone rogue.

So close to the perfection of a 914, but just a little off. Also, unrealistic. Without that huge grille, where will they hide all the cruise control cameras?

Not this.

I want this.

I like how BMW makes a more normal grille, but then goes and makes some of the slats diagonal just to keep everyone mad again. It definitely has the fat generic look that they seem to be going for.

The render is nice, but not certifiable today with crash testing and active safety mandates…sadly :frowning:

So true. It’s like they are trying to make it shit.

Stared for a while at that blue SUV with the diagonal kidney lines, looking at the image on my screen so I only noticed the major lines and shapes.

They did carry that ‘belt’ from the rear fender down into the lower front bumper, but it meanders and vanishes along the way. They did a good job of styling the lumpiness - technical execution 9.5/10, concept artistry 1.5/10. It’s like a Balenciaga ugly shoe of a vehicle.

^ that article is the biggest load of BS I’ve read in a while. I hope I was Chatgpt responsible not an actual designer.

Below, The latest fuckup. The new M5.

Or “how CAD designers fought with engineering and engineering didn’t want to design a new door so they just gave up.
