Want to Make a Career Change

Hey all,

I want to get into the graphic design field, however I have already been through a four year college with an unrelated degree. What should I do to enter into this field…online certificate program, associate degree, any advice would be much appreciated! I have so many bubbling ideas in my head, but now I need to put them down on paper/screen! What do employers look at most - experience, degrees, or portfolios??? Thank you!

All of the above. Of course is you have an amazing portfolio you might get by the degree and experience requirment but you would be in the minority.

Go back to school and get a 2nd bachelor’s. Be sure to do an internship or two. This is what I did and that’s after having a BFA in sculpture and an MFA in industrial design.

Don’t go for a Masters in GD. You don’t have the background or skills in design to be pursuing a MFA yet. If you do you will find have a difficult time landing a job.

One more thing. I don’t recommend online education in design. I learned so much from the other students at school. Also, the class critiques can’t possible be as good as in person. You also make contacts at school. I’m not sure an online school will do this for you.

get an MBA or learn CSS, java, XML, etc.

design “careers” are an utter waste of time.

get an MBA or learn CSS, java, XML, etc.

The MBA is a good idea but CSS, java, XML might all be outsourced… a lot of it already is.
