Maybe this topic has been discussed before but I would like to know how many vacation days can we expect here in America as an IDr. The average person in Europe takes atleast 4 weeks of vacations in a year with 2-3 years on the job in any profession + holidays.
What can an American expect with 2-4-6-8-+ years as an IDr or in any profession.
i’ve been working for about a year and have yet to take some days off for vacation. i’ve switched jobs once… and at both jobs i got/get 5 days after 6 months.
i have taken sick days for vacations/job interview
8+ years, new job=2 weeks/year for the first 3 years. i accrue vacation time each paycheck.
friend of mine works for earthlink. she gets mad-CRAZY vacation time. after 5 years, she had accrued enough to take off 2 months for a sabbatical. americans don’t get the vacation time europeans do. even the time off i get, i rarely use all of it. i get bored easily on vacation.

The vacation policies sound to my ear very depressing. Although the profession is really built inside me and working is still in the flow, I would like to travel and experience new cultures just to broaden my insight freely and not only on business trips. Also some time for recharging the batteries in the wilderness would be highly appreciated.
In my opinion, the creativity of a designer could be improved by giving some loose? creating flexible systems and taking some pressure off the shoulders could actually result in better work quality.
yeah, i’ll take the salary and performance bonuses over the extra vaca. i get REALLY bored after 1 week on vacation. i use most of my time off for my hobbies.
yes. 2-3 weeks is standard. 5 sick days, new years day, easter, memorial day (late may), fourth of july, labor dar (september), thanksgiving, christmas, plus one day before or after the big ones if they fall in the middle of the week. typically one floating holiday is offered too (MLK day, etc). long weekend holidays in the states can be pretty hectic as everyone tends to be travelling.
