Tunes to Design By

I just bought the new Perry Ferrell’s Satellite Party album Ultra Payloaded. Its awesome had me rocking out all afternoon.

Made me wonder what are you listening to? I am always looking for that next album that inspires.

A few bands/albums that do it for me right now:

Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine (classic)
Dave Matthews - Crash
Rusted Root - When I Woke
31 Knots - The Days and Nights of Everything Anywhere

Recently I love everything from the swedish band “the knife”, I have heard three albums, “the knife” , “deep cuts” and “silent shout”, really good music. Reminds me when Bjork started and was new and exciting.

i saw pfsp on letterman a while back, and was totally surprised. i can’t beleive that guy’s still at it. good for him.

music for me:

we’re lucky in sea-town to have one of the best public radio stations anywhere KEXP… they stream online, check’m out… their programs are pretty cool too.

latest cd’s i’ve bought

white stripes - icky thump
at the drive in - relationship of command
hiroglyphics - 3rd eye vision (lost my old copy)
donisaur jr - the new one… can’t remember what it’s called
blue scholars - bayani

I like stuff that stimulates my brain without distracting me with lyrics. Mostly electronica, nujazz, house, broken beat.

Some nice recent downloads:

Beat Pharmacy
Mark Farina

I love the Broken Beat Radio podcast:
Incredibly innovative stuff

Pretty all over the place:: on the playlist today:

The New P0rnographers
She Wants Revenge
Kruder & Dorfmeister
Massive Attack
Missy Eliot

The Bad Plus
Shiny Toy Guns
Justin Timberlake (not going to lie)
King Missile
and… some early Michael Jackson and Depeche Mode

Well i do like me some piano…

but sometimes i do need the extra boost that rock can give me…
i dont have any specifics, but lately ive been listening to:

Moonspell -Alma MAtter
Pearl Jam
White stripes.
i could go on forever man…

also i listen to moby, i like lounge music and bosanova, a little jazz never hurts… its all good…

out of a rut

Sharon Jone and the Dap-Kings
Amy Winehouse
Mark Ronson
Kid Sister
Mash Hall
Brother Ali
Lonnie Liston Smith
Chrisette Michel
DJ Shadow
Vickie Anderson

The bands I listen to when I’m designing/coding.

Most of the time I’m listening to the Beatles or John Lennon. Revolver, the White Album, and Imagine are most common. Some Tupac in there sometimes.

For those who listen to music while they sketch, do you listen on an MP3 player? I tried that but I found it’s much easier to concentrate if the music is coming out of speakers.

steely dan
john lee hooker
steve windwood

I like soft music…

The White Stripes new album…Icky Thump…free stream of the whole album over

free and good  Rock and Design!!! or Design and Roll baby!!!

Rock, Roll and Design !!!

Sex, Drugs, and Design!!! …that would be a nice T shirt.

y’all are going to hate me but I have seriously tuned into Percy Faith.

If anyone has xmradio, escape is great; it is all old time chill out music.

I am talking about big band/classical/musak/instrumental versions of popular hits.

It is better than trance, down tempo and more.

this is pretty much my music collection, which i love each and every one of these albums and listen to them regularly :

When I’m trying to conceptualise something, I prefer silence, or accoustics are most. I get easily distracted by lyrics, especially if it’s a song I like a lot, and before I know it I stop thinking about the project and just start singing along.

Some light music is good for mindless sketching/coding though.
