Hey ‘Guest’
You must have a lot of time on your hands to type up this guys daily plans. Could it possibly be yours?
If you have 20,000 views and are still looking for a job, put down the crayons and find a new profession.
Actually that may not be the case. I find most of the people scanning the portfolios are students or job seekers checking out the competition. Very few are employers although I have received a couple of hits.
I set my clock by this guy with the paint brush:
In coroflot site… I got only 7 companies wrote to me asking if I am available for job. Only 4 actually turn in to interview.
Most of them are people who wrote to me and let me know they liked my work.
I start to wonder how many employers really look at the portfolios
It’s not like Coroflot is “the source” for potential applicants. Employers are expecting candidates that are initiative and assertive in looking for jobs, not people who sit on their ass waiting to be contacted. Granted, there’s nothing wrong with posting portfolio on the web, but wouldn’t overly depend on it.
Isn’t there an old saying: “there is no such thing as bad publicity”?
My balls are swollen.
just get some silicon
It’d be nice if he at least updated his work, but he just keeps posting the same ol’ crap!
If it looks like crap, feels like crap, smells like crap- it is crap.
CRAP
don’t really see the problem unless you wish to be in his place
semes futile to me
Dear Tim,
Your “updated” portfolio is starting to annoy me. If you are going to “update” it, would it kill you to put some new stuff in it?!!!
He can update his portfolio all he wants - I would never hire him because he can’t spell “Wal-Mart”!!!
He designed a microwave oven for the largest company in the world and can’t spell their name correctly! What’s up with that?
Portfolios are like resumes, they should reflect the abilities of a candidate. You have the opportunity to get them reviewed and proofed by numerous people before publication. There isn’t any excuse for errors. As a hiring manager I see things like that as a big red flag.
Today’s lesson: Customers don’t like seeing their names spelled wrong.
Nothing like judging a book by its cover.
Last I knew spelling abilities do not reflect design abilities as well as a person’s experience designing a microwave for the largest retail channel.
I, like most designers, forgive him for his spelling mistake. Just as long as he doesn’t apply for a job at Wal-Mart.
Also, about his portfolio updating practices…usually the resume/portfolio’s on top of the pile get the first interview calls.
“Nothing like judging a book by its cover.”
isnt that what people do looking at couple images w captions?
i agree spelling should be correct. its not a forum post. or private email. its face to the world. shows attention to detail. or lack of.
maybe not all hiring managers care. but some do. is it smart to not care? does it make sense when it can be fixed? no.
Most hiring managers I know would be looking for him to design, not spell.
I agree, it should be fixed, but One-word, calling it the deal breaker is a bit over dramatic don’t you think? Would you rather have someone who can spell better but design worse?
I know you have to start eliminating candidates somehow with all the kids graduating these days, but do it based on talent. Instead of throwing away his resume, why not send him an email and let him know and help a kid out?
Don’t discriminate against the phonicly challenged, you might end up with a class action.
of course one-word is nitpicking. but other than that its not always black and white, you’ll NEVER have a situation where its either or:
GREATEST designer in the world with bad grammar and spelling
AND
greatest english articulation whiz with spelling bee championshiop belts worn to an interview but shitty portfolio
both sitting in your waiting area. No.
They’re all most likely in the fat part of the bell curve, and if someone doesn’t know the difference between their they’re its it’s and spells like a dumbass, it DOES matter. I’ve looked through a lot of process guides and portfolios, reading the text descriptions, and i see poor grammar and spelling, i dismiss it. Same as I would if he/she is in their 20’s, and looks like some hip hop idiot from the suburbs or a punk scene green day wannabe. I can figure it out in 5 minutes based on looks (yes), speech, body language, etc.
holla!
You forgot to capitalize your I’s
Seriously though, the kid in question didn’t screw up a lot of words, he is in the Fat part of the curve (good analogy BTW). He misspelled one word that would not be found in the spell checker. Give a kid a break is all I’m saying.
totally agree with the specific example of tim.
i was just doing my 2 cents on an old pet peeve… bad grammar and spelling should not be an issue for people in this day and age. unless its thru im. ttyl roflmasaofskjfsdao
