After watching the opening ceremony, I was amazed on so many levels. Of course, seeing all the countries of the world unite together is always a site to see, but tonight’s show was incredible. I can’t imagine the work involved in creating an event so spectacular and fluid at such a large scale. The stadium, the music, the performances, the fireworks, the TORCH…to me, everything was breathtaking.
Architecturally speaking, Santiago Calatrava’s design is stunning, and I hope more of his work will be built here. Currently. the MAM is the only building in this country he has designed. I know we don’t usually discuss architecture here, but surely there are some of you (like me) that appreciate and read about it.
So post your thoughts (and your grievances - like the damn US media editing and commentating over the performances) …
I agree - it was a beautiful show with class, but a bit boring for most people to watch, which is why there is so much of bob costas talking. The stadium is incredible from what I gather and that fire cauldron was well designed - everything in Atlanta in comparison was pure themepark cheese. Here’s to the greeks
My biggest grievance is with the media coverage. I think it was the last one or next to the last olympics where they said the chinese mens gymnasts had incredible performances, lots of 10’s etc. But they didn’t show very much of it on TV, just the american squad that sucked that year. I watch to see the best performances, not just to cheer on the u.s. That sucked, hopefully this year they’ll show all the good performances without the “lets see if the u.s. can win this one” slant to it.
Dimitris Papaioannou, the concept manager of the opening ceremony, to me, is one of the best contemporary artists all over the world. Not because he is greek but you shoul see some of his performances. I know he visists US to present his work so, if he comes again in your country do not miss his performance.
I was absolutely amazed. does anyone know of any good articles on it? Bob and Katie were inane, stupid. I have been amused by bob’s comments a total of one time in two weeks. I guess they were trying to say something, anything, to keep the bushie philistines from changing the channel.
