the birth of a icon, and its modern interpretation

Well, we already discussed the virtues and vices of retro cars and replicas a lot around
here: How to built a heir to the throne
(one of the threads)

So I am more interested in the o.p. question of “soul”. How do “appliances” get to have a soul?
*
Jeremy Clarkson even wrote a book on it: http://www.amazon.com/I-Know-You-Got-Soul/dp/0141022922

But for me to no avail. I read it and didn’t think I became much smarter on the subject.

How come that we intersubjectively feel that something has soul and something else hasn’t?

In the case of the new Mini it might be that they tried overly hard. The interior just doesn’t do
it any justice.

  • So is Plastic a throughback in itself?
  • Are “grown” materials better?
  • Has patina an effect on soul?

P.S: One of my favourite bits of this years Top Gear season so far is Jeremy dooming the brandnew
Ferrari 599 GTO as a “laptop”.
