Tesla CyberTruck Design Review: Elon has balls of steel

I still love this article on electric cars Has the Battery Bubble Burst?

Key takeaway:

Stored energy in fuel is considerable: gasoline is the champion at 47.5 MJ/kg and 34.6 MJ/liter; the gasoline in a fully fueled car has the same energy content as a thousand sticks of dynamite. A lithium-ion battery pack has about 0.3 MJ/kg and about 0.4 MJ/liter (Chevy VOLT).

Considering that, why are there at least three companies basically building brick shaped electric trucks?

Based on the driving skills and habits of many Tesla owners I’ve noticed around Seattle, the curb rash on these Cyber-wheel covers is going to be just awful.

I’m not the only one!

With the way the bed is designed, you can really only load/access from the back, limiting what you can actually haul. I would have rather this been an SUV than a poor usability truck.

Thinking the same thing, AVClub.
oops- responding to your comment from further up this thread

as someone that loves design this feels like a f*** you, maybe unintentional.
At some level I admire that they didn’t give 2 shits to modern design conventions

I agree with this view. The guy has “f-you” money, and just enough fans to provide a public rubber stamp of approval on anything he does. Perhaps there are very, very good reasons for the aesthetics that will become apparent when/if the vehicle is released in this form.

As a truck owner and moderate enthusiast I admit this could meet 75% of my use cases. I’m not even that tall, so the apparent head room impingement isn’t an issue  … I sure hope future drivers of this thing don’t tool around on the freeways with all their light bars blazing.

I really really really hope this is just a stunt and this is NOT the real vehicle. It’s so bad from almost any angle .<< he he

Apparently it is designed so the metal can be formed instead of stamped and no under frame body, which allows the low cost. Regardless, if you were going to use a cheap production method, I don’t think this the best execution.

I’m on board with the marketing stunt theory.

ah, the subtle double burn. I love it.

Agreed. What are the price points on those things? If memory serves I thought they were way up there?

Are these both trucks? Yup.

Do they have performance capabilities that other trucks do not? Yup.

Do they look cool? Eh.

Can you use them for the core uses of a truck? Technically yes.

Why do they exist? “Because I can.”

I’m putting my money on this being a marketing ploy because they haven’t got it ready on time for when Elon promised. Both the design and the windows breaking.

Man, I can’t escape this thing in all of my digital feeds right now… and people texting to ask what I think about it etc.I just keep sending them this link  but overall I think I struggle with this because I think design should be optimistic, friendly, and forward looking… this low polygon bullet proof thing seems like the cynical take on the future that a billionaire tech bro would have. So, personally I have a hard time even looking at it from the highest level. But maybe this pst appoclypical rich version of mad max is what people want? If so I’m sad for our future.

If this is what people want, the future is going to be a scary place.

I want to know the rationale and reasoning behind this thing. What is the thought behind how this truck came to be?

If what they revealed was anything like any of the concept renderings we’ve seen for the past 6 months this would be the most desired pickup ever made! We’d be talking about how impressive all of the technical performance details are and how fast these would replace every truck on the road today.

Were they actually trying to curb the appeal? “Our platform is too good. We’ll never be able to keep up with demand if we make this too cool so let’s do something ridiculous first?”

Or is it as simple as Elon can do whatever he wants and people will still go nuts about it?

 Hilarious take!

Maybe it is just to prepare people for their new bus…

Sheeesh, that Sandcrawler take is perfect.

The Bollinger model B1 is like $125K I think. So maybe you can buy four Cybers for one Bollinger. Bollinger doesn’t even come with pretense or smugness as a standard option.
