steel treatment which retains metallic look

Hi All

I’m currently making some steel furniture which I’d like to finish in some way that will maintain the metallic look of the material yet able to withstand outdoor conditions. I know one can bath steel in hydrochloric acid for a few hours and then polish it, has anyone here had an experience with it? Does anyone know of some good websites with information about this or other methods of preparing steel such as clear coats or polish?

Thanks

Syllogism

If you have already decided that straight stainless steel (like a 304 or other 18% chromium - 8% nickel alloy) isn’t good enough, I would look into electroplating.

Essentially they charge the part, dunk it in a bath with particles of chromium or nickel and it creates a protective layer on the surface of the part.

It’s kind of like anodizing.

As for websites, finishing.com should have what you need.
