Solid Surface

Hello Everyone. I, am new to this forum. Recently my company completed a few different and unique jobs using Solid Surface. Partnering with different Industrial Designers. In my world of Solid Surface granite has really taken over the market. Many Kitchen designers only see a counter surface that has color .So its been very encouraging to know there are Industrial designers out there that think differently Solid Surface has un-limited design abilities. We have made many different pieces of furniture using Solid Surface. One of our specialties is Thermo-forming . Its a process where the material is heated and than formed into the desired object.

I wanted to post to inform your world that Solid Surface is something you might want to consider in your projects. I would be glad to answer ay questions you might have. I, am sort of on a quest to revitalize the world of Solid Surface.

If you get a chance do a goggle search type in z-island corian. This is a classic example on how Solid Surface can be used. Check out the link below my name . I’ve put a photo album with some different pictures.

I would love to hear your thoughts

Regards

Jon Olson

If you would like to advertise on core77, here is the info:

Hello Yo. I wasn’t trying to advertise. Sorry if it came out that way. I was merely trying to highlight Solid Surface as a product worthy of design. If The links bother you I will delete them.

So advertise on the sly…I mean Cheap…Ok…For Free!

Oh…and this CHEAP advertising would be better served on a site catering toward INTERIOR designers not Industrial (product for the un-enlightened) and Graphic designers, with the a sprinkling of Architects and Engineers.

Ouch. Two things I hate to be associated with cheap and sneaky. I think perhaps my post was worded incorrectly. Believe it or not my intention wasn’t to advertise my company for free . I’ve been posting in many different forums not to mentioned Interior Design. Posted here because much of my work involves Industrial Designers.

As I mentioned in an earlier post I, am trying to unlighted as many designers as possible about the merits of Solid Surface. Why? Trying to help my peers. Spread the word I guess. If this is out of line for your forum I completely understand and will move on.

Thank you for advice.

C’mon guys, I think a little slack is in order here…

With regard to Mr. Olson’s crime of “advertising”; my verdict is not guilty. As an ID with his head heavily into the “what’s & how’s” I always find new sources of materials, processes, and vendors interesting. I don’t see a one-time, exploratory, introduction of his products and services, to determine if there is sufficient interest to warrant paying for ongoing advertising on this site, as out of line. The keyword is: one-time.

Mr. Olson’s post would have been more appropriately placed in the “Materials & Processes” and “Furniture” forums.

At least his posting was design oriented, unlike the annoying cell phone, phone s e x, casino, buy-time-share, etc. spam that has floated through here in the past.

Just my $.02.

Your right. It is not out of line (and much better than online casino viagra p0rn). I also agree that it would be better placed in materials or furniture or both.

My point is only that if someone wants ONLY to promote their services, they should buy an add. If they want to contribute their knowledge to the forums (and promote their services at the same time a bit), that is cool and totally welcome.

Hello Lmo. Your point is actually what I was trying to do. Inform part of the design community on what I feel is a wonderful material that is so much more than a counter surface.

Your correct I should have posted this thread in another section on the site. Would the Site administrator please re-post .

The material allows you to do so much. You folks have so many ideas. For instance a very simple thing done with Solid Surface is some will make a cheese tray with a small section .They’ll put the tray in the freezer before using it will retain the coldest for some time. So what? I guess would be the question. But you as a designer can you use that thought and do something else with the product? Does that make sense? Do you see what I, am asking?

Or you could go the other way. It also retains heat For a while . Does that have any value when it comes to designing something?

The product is water proof. Has great sound quality. Used at times to make speakers. Non-porous. Currently there using Solid Surface on the out side of buildings + roof tops

The only agenda I have is to see the product used. I would love to help answer any questions.

I, am not against adverting. I currently have an add on another site. But I, am not here to drum up business.

I’ve already learned from you folks the post have been very informing. I never realized how much goes into designing a product before the public sees it. Nice work.

…hopefully granite has run its course…i find it wanting.

Formed concrete countertops are almost as expensive as granite, and a local stone cutter does some amazing work in limestones, but wife and I are so bored with the overall trend that we’re actually thinking about going back to Formica.

Our kitchen has 65 sq. ft. of counter top surface, which translates into over $8,000 in raw material, not including fabrication and installation labor. Even though the tile surface we currently have is shot and needs to be replaced, $8K represents most of the cost of a new BMW F800ST … which I REALLY need.

Granite according to the Freedonia Group is expected to rise another 15 % this year. So who knows what will happen there. I agree its time is over .

Laminate has a large color selection. Which I would assume is a draw for some. One trend that I have seen recently is to flush mount sinks into a laminate tops. Pretty cool looking.

unlike the annoying , phone s e x, casino, buy-time-share, casino … viagra p0rn etc. spam that has floated through here in the past.

spoke too soon … … it’s back… . . .

Man you guys are a tough bunch! Wouldn’t it have been Spam If I said ( If you pay me $15.00 I can tell you all you need to know about granite act quickly and we’ll throw in a 30 day trial of Viagra)? Someone made a comment about granite I gave a response the same with the laminate.

I want to help so that’s for the reminders

Here’s an example of Solid Surface and how it can be used within the design field.

maybe worded a bit too ad-like, but I appreciate the sentiment in letting us know about a material and its possibilities and applications.

Really, that is the strength of the core boards bringing together different designers from different industries and backgrounds.

Given that the knowledge and info supplied was more about a general material (solid surfacing) and not purely about X product from Y company, I think there’s value here.

and good thing you didnt post your thread with the topic “Solid, Hard, All Day Long!”

As far as I’m concerned, the original post was fine. It sparked an interesting discussion which is what these boards are all about. I have deleted gratuitous solicitations on this board before when it’s obviously an advertisement…

Play nice…

Thank you for your thoughts Gentlemen.
