Screen quality of new Cintiq 12WX

New Wacom Cintiq 12WX looks great being smaller, lighter, and maybe better, yet the specs for the screen is somewhat off putting, the brightness is only 180 cd/m2, a step down from its larger 21" sibling with 250 cd/m2. Would this lead to discomforting eye strain during long periods of use? Considering such a low brightness, who would want using it as a second monitor? Rapidly improving specs for large displays from Samsung, Dell and Apple leave the cintiq screen behind even now, just imagine what price/quality for a monitor will be in few years. This will inevitably affect the current very steep price of cintiq models.
Has anyone experienced low brightness as a problem on older monitors?

Display technology is rapidly changing, I wouldn’t consider the brightness on the 12" display an issue - it doesn’t matter how good other manufacturers displays are, because they aren’t digitizers. No one will buy the Cintiq specifically as a second screen, they’ll buy it as a perhipheral that has the option to be used as a screen.

I can’t see the slightly lower brightness being an issue. I’ve never had an issue with brightness on any monitor. Older LCD monitors just tend to suffer from poor quality, color reproduction, and ghosting.

Thanks for your opinion, I guess a lower brightness helps a bit to boost the contrast of the screen, would you consider 1280x800 resolution as a limiting factor when using cintiq?

Interesting comments about switching from an Intuos tablet to cintiq model 21"

The resolution isn’t great and more resolution is ALWAYS better, but 1280x800 on a 12" screen is about average nowadays (consider that years ago 15" glass monitors ran at anywhere from 800x600-1024x768).

This was discussed in another thread, but I can see it being a useful tool in certain cases, particularly if you’re a Mac user or already have a machine and don’t want to purchase a tablet PC.

As far as the 21" Cintiq goes…the complaints the other guy had seem almost to be outdated points. The color reproduction on the newest revision I have at work seems to be very, very good - WAY better than my tablet PC.

Regarding DPI - that just sounds like a mental block. When I’m sketching I’m zooming in and out so often that it doesn’t really effect my work.

It does get hot - a coworker of mine has a special glove he made (thin fabric that covers your wrist/palm but not fingers so you’re not directly touching the screen) and it seems to work well for him.

Overall though the Cintiq is an awesome device. It’s a bit clumsy but once I got used to it I can’t see myself working without it.

Thanks a lot for your feedback, very much appreciated! It is a bit tough to buy unseen a new model based on the quality of the earlier version.

i got one of these in january, screen brightness is no problem

I’ll second that, the screen is fine. If you have the cash, get the 20" though, the size is worth it.

I think the 12" is the better of the two. I used a 21" for a summer and it’s heavy, too gloassy, and hets too hot. It’s nice to have the 12". It feels like drawing on 8.5x11 paper which I am used to. The screen is less glare prone as the 21" and it never gets hot. Love the one I use.

I haven’t used the 12 yet, but I do know that I have my cintiq set at 40% brightness. It’s too bright and causes sore eyes. It also doesn’t get as warm (or seems so anyways). Your needs would depend on ambient light in your work space, though. I sit next to a large bright window…

this is what I like about the 12wx…easier on ur eyes…doesn’t fry em as bad…I like to rotate my page around and the 12wx is nice for doing that as well.

Great comments on the brightness and the resolution.

How does the screen surface to surrounding perimeter surface feel? Is there any sudden stop with the pen between the two surfaces because of the tiny groove or parting line when you go to sketch lines outside the screen surface? I haven’t seen the 12WX in person yet.

It is a very nice size if you are used to sketching on 8.5x11 as snugja mentioned… I don’t find myself stroking off the active pen surface onto the outer casing. For me, the program buttons on either side seem more useful as well since the whole thing is just generally much tighter and fit compared to the other cintiqs in the fam.

Wow, I’m hearing many more positive comments about the 12WX here than when i asked about it a while back… I had originally decided to forget the mini-cintiq and go with an intuos3, but now im maybe rethingking that… I think i really need to try both to see if the difference is worth the extra $500…
