PC v. MAC?

As a new graduate of Industrial Design and Tech. in the UK I have only used PC’s for design work whilst at universty. I am contemplating investing in a MAC to widen my skill base while I go through the frustrating process searching for my first ID role. I just wondered whether you people in the know thought this would be beneficial or not?

Also what CAD packages are a must for any industrial designer, there are so many out there that I don’t know which will give me the upper hand and which are just pointless. Any advice would be appreciated.

This is a non issue now that Macs use Intel Processors. Macs now run Windows XP with Boot Camp.

is this thread double posted?

focus on software! screw the hardware!

learn something that can make what you want to make… they all have strengths and weaknesses.

me, I’m using Pro-Engineer for modeling, but it isnt the most popular for designers, more for engineers… I do design with it too, though.

I would have learned Alias or something … but I wanted to send files direct to the manufacturer, some of which are VERY precise, and I seem to be able to MAKE all the things I want to in Pro-E, although making big blobby swoopy shapes for the sake of it seems to be easier in some other packages.

True, but it can be done in Pro/E. And very precisely, too.

I agree with earlier posts when they say “Find the software, buy the hardware the runs the software.”

There is a famous chap named Kevin Quigley (Quigley Design), and he uses Ashlar-Vellums Cobalt. It runs on the Mac and PC.

I do think the Intel Macs will eventually run the other PC CAD packages one day soon, also.
