paying for school

I tried to register for the board here, but it doesnt seem to be working…

Anyways, Im a sophomore studying ID at UH, and Im trying to figure out my financial situation for the upcoming semester, and it looks like Im going to be lacking quite a bit. As you guys know, design can be pretty expensive, with the supply costs added to the already high tuitition fees. Also, it would be hard to get a job, becasue my studio takes up basically most of my life. So, I was wondering if anyone out there in design land had advice or ideas for a poor college kid like me, needing cash, but lacking lots of time. Thanks guys

IF YOU HAVE THE PASSION AND THE SKILLS (OR THE ABILITY TO HAVE YOUR SKILLS REFINED) THEN DO WHAT YOU CAN TO GO. DONT WAIT. YOU WILL BE ABLE TO GET LOANS.

in school I was a delivery driver for a big pizza place - it’s an easy BS job. You could work late (2,3 AM) on weekends and weekend days. short shifts and GOOD money. I supported myself on 15-20 hours a week (I lived cheaply too). I know many people who took out loans as “living money” for rent, food, entertainment and now they have huge debts compared to me ($23k).

If you think you can’t handle a job, think again - it may make you work more efficiently in your studios just because you know that 20 hours of your week is already committed. Looking back at school, I had a ton more time to get things done than I thought I did at the time.

The smartest thing I ever did concerning money was to start waitressing early, when I was 16. Now I am starting grad school in NY, and I have been able to save 4,000 in basically 3 months. That or bartending(a littly too soon for you, I realize) The money is taxed the least, and we make a killing! The work is grueling, physically and emotionally taxing, etc. but the payoff is more than worth it. As for me, I have found a disign philosophy that combines this kind of work, the inequalities of haves and have-nots, and my creative endevors. I mean, one has greatly affected the other, so it has not just been a money-making thing. Remember, what ever job you take to fund your projects, it will affect your private work. Like it or not, so weigh that!! Good luck!

There are private student loans too. Check with your bank as well as many others. They all don’t have the same rate. I was pretty happy with citibank: http://studentloan.citibank.com/

I also worked friday and satuday nights as a cocktail waitress when I was in school. Back then I made at least $200 a weekend in 16 hours. Thats $12.50 an hour back in the mid 80’s.[/url]

This is very over-saturated but if you’re good and can stand out can be very helpful. Learn to DJ. An easy $200 for an hours work on a weekend when you would be out partying instead. Big money for little time invested. Become real good and poplular, get paid $500-$1000 for one hour guest spot, and they fly you out and pay for a hotel. Really helps out, but then again that’s another skill you’d have to take time to get good at first, a whole lot of wannabe’s out there.

Hey, move to sweden! Free education.
