What happens when you’re busy completing your design work (product) & later found out that it has already been done by other the similar way/concept… ?
you tell me.
sounds like it happened to you?
well there is generally not much you can do. It depends often on what kind of products it is and what is the “overlapping” part.
Can you give us some more info?
Maybe you can spin it into a new direction or rethink it.
This happens all the time tho.
Similar or same?
similar can be ok, you are not reinventing the wheel with every product.
If its the same, you will have a problem
This happened to me around a year ago. I had designed a coat rack that I took from concept to final production documents. I did this for a personal project that I wanted to sale online and in boutique shops only to find it a few months later in a CB2 catalog. It wasn’t the exact same but it was close enough for me to stop and reevaluate my options. Right now the design lives in renderings and cad files but has yet to be produced.

Wow there are so many variables in that question, I guess I default to the earlier comment ‘similar or same’
Okay, i started off researching on some photograph with concept A, then i finally settle down and start sketching & found that i want more info from Google which i sort of type in my Concept “name” & found something with the same concept almost similar …
Is there anything you can do to improve your concept? make it better than the existing one?
Depends on how you approach it. You can use it an example but make it your own. I have a friend that wants to make a luggage with a built-in scooter for a school project. After a little research I found 2 similar concepts already. I told him to don’t make that stop him, use the other ideas as starting off points or inspiration but make it different.
Just because there’s already one in the market doesn’t mean anything IMO. There can always be improvements. Imagine if there were only 1 chair or 1 car, there isn’t. There’s many sub-markets within sub-markets in the car industry, and many competitors in that sub-sub-market. Make that “luggage scooter” for a different market or something. It actually may make easier if there’s already a similar idea so you know what you would change or what does or doesn’t work.
Yeah, i agree.
They will surely be overlapping of ideas, even unknowingly…
i’d decided to continue with the concept that I’ve started with, only to do it better…
Thank you guys for all of the advice given!
