I have 3ds Max Version 8 and I need to open a Version 9 file.
Is there anything that one user can do in version 9 to save down a version so other folks in my group can open it?
This is the best I’ve found from the AutoDesk Knowledge Base & help files, My subscription ran out about a year ago…
Workaround
To open a file from a newer version in an older version, export the file (most used is the 3DS file format). The drawback to this method is that it reduces the objects to triangle meshes. All features, such as object parameters, modifiers, filelinks, etc., are lost.
Here’s some stuff that I got from another site if anyone else is having this trouble…
"Max is not backwards compatible. You will need to export your Max 9 file to
a format that Max 8 will be able to read. The FBX format may work for you.

…This is a fix which takes alittle descrambling. All the other Autodesk stuff I’ve used in the past had a “Save Down” option. This must be grandfathered from Discrete.
