We’ve discussed adding a 3D scanner to the office toolset but never seem to be able to justify it. What would be great is an updated database of firms or consultants that own these kinds of tools, and can provide scanning and associated valuable services. We just had a need for a scanning job on the other side of the country and it took a while to track down a place that could do the scanning.

Having been using 3D Scanning for over 20 years, in just about every industry, if there’s always a use case that this technology can be leveraged. It is company dependent either for quality control and inspection of products coming off the manufacturing line or existing molds where no CAD exist… etc.

I do hear you about being able to find credible companies that offer services that are worth their weight. I’m seeing a lot of offerings out there from people with 3D Scanners that cost $1000 or their iPhones and thinking they’re offering metrology level services. Or at the other end, a company saying they need tolerances of 0.00001” when 0.001” will do for reverse engineering purposes.

There’s a ton more that could be talked about but would need a bit more specifics about the industry that you’re in.
