Need help..

Hello everybody,
I worked in India for about three years as a web/interactive designer and almost 4 years in the field of Interior/Architecture/ Visual merchandizing. Right now I am living in the bay area and I am looking for a job as a web/interactive designer. . Right now I just need an opening in the design field .

I would like to know few things about the portfolio presentation. Is it okay to have a CD presentation or is it absolutely necessary to have a book or a printed material. Since I do not know anybody here in the field of design, I do not have much guidance in this area. How should I go about it? I am trying to put my resume on the career sites. Do they really help? How can I search an entry level job here. Can I get some direction???

Thanks… :unamused:

Yeah I’m sort of in the same boat as you. But you seem to be more focused in one thing (interaction design). I know the ins and outs of this kind of thing since I’ve been looking for a few months now (in the bay area).

Here’s a few tips for you:

Get your site posted on the web if it already is not.

It helps to have a cd and a portfolio book (fully designed). just in case. but not really essential. especially for web. If you want a really high end job. Like I mean if your shooting for the top of the industry you can forget about the slap-and-stick portfolios. You must be able to create a book that has been fully designed by your self.

Send an email first then you MUST follow up with a phone call a day or two later. Be direct and to the point. Kiss ass and butter them up.

Forget about the career sites. You need a job now and you must generate the leads yourself. But career sites are helpfull because they post jobs.

Look on craigslist.org, monster.com, bajobs.com, creativehotlist.com, and of course corolot.com. I like to go through the job postings and then also look through the directory of businesses.

Lastly. Good luck. You picked the area and economy thats being hit the hardest for graphic design in the country.

----Also What do you mean by Portfolio book. Can you tell me more about that. Is it something like I should get the printouts of my projects and then mount them and get that binded???

----Also I am not just looking for Web/Interactive but also Graphics. Its just that I do not have Print portfolio. I never got a chance to work in the print media…

Thank you very much for your tips…
