I transferred to MICA a little over a year ago. I knew people here before I came. I want to major in industrial design and minor in graphic design. My problem with MICA is that I don’t really like living in Baltimore (I like Baltimore, but not living in the City, not having a car, and having to go to places via public transportation that take a good half a day + public transportation is a little scary, to say the least. ), I don’t really like many of the people that go here, and I really miss my friends and family.
The reason I’m thinking of going to SCAD is that it’s closer to home and they seem to be a good school. I would be able to have a car there, be involved in my friend’s business back home that is art-related, and it seems to have a good Industrial design and graphic design programs.
I’m still tentative about transferring because MICA’s design programs really challenge your thinking behind your design and I don’t want to feel like a quitter (This would be the third school I transferred to.) I like that SCAD’s programs seem very career oriented, but I do want to be challenged. I don’t want to be one of the best when I get there, I want to be challenged to have great design not just to get a job (I do want that too though!!!). I chose design as my major because I like that it affects so many people, and it can change minds and lives. I want to be a careful designer. I also don’t want to be seen as a quitter, like I couldn’t handle all the stress of having to use public transportation (although I’m pretty sure I have used it more than most MICA kids), living a really urban life away from home, and not having my closest friends around me. But I’m not sure if that even matters. In the end its about my career.
What’s your opinion? I know that I will have to be the one to make the decision in the end, but I would really love to hear everyone’s input
Thanks!
