With stories like that, the object is just the symbolic trigger. You’ll always hear stories like that over anything, shoes, parking spot, whatever. That kind of retaliation is a response to the disrespect to the person on a deeper level, not the loss of an object.
Objects are symbols of some form of ideal to people, especially if someone worked hard for it. Destroy the object, you attack the person essential being on a deeper level, beyond just the fact of what it may cost.
What would you think would happen to anybody who burned an american flag on american soil 2 days after 9/11? After all, it’s just a 2 dollar piece of fabric.
