In need of direction.

Hey everyone,

I am a 28 year-old massage therapist who wants to retire from MT. I have loved design for as long as I can remember and Industrial Design specifically has always sparked my interest. Upon graduating from high school, I decided to go into MT instead of design because I thought I was being practical. I even had a partial scholarship to SCAD from this competition, but threw it away because I was scared to leave home. Anyway, point is, I wasnt ready then, but I’m ready now. The city I live in doesn’t have a program at all and getting out of the midwest is very appealing to me at the moment. Only problem is, that I’m broke and cant afford to go to a private art school like CCA (ideally I want to go to California) and I’ve looked into CSULB and SFSU and I know that SFsU is out of the question from the reviews I’ve read and CSULB looks pretty awesome.

I guess my question is, can anyone give a nearly 30 year-old, broke, American advice on what undergrad program to look into? I am interested in social/global conscience design. What are some of the reputable schools known for? I know they have different philosophies and focus. I am really trying to narrow down my choices.

What are some examples of social/global conscious design that you have in mind to help direct the conversation?

To throw you a couple, here are some that range from non profit to consultancy.
