ideation sketches

Here is an example of some quick sketches I like to do for ideation. Some proportions are off but I dont mess with things too much at this stage. Comments welcome. Would love to hear/see what everyone does to “get into the flow.”

I start with the scenario of how the user may be using it, whats his state of emotion is and how I want the product to fit into that scenario. Then I use that as a reference for the rest of my process.

And yes I sketch those scenarios and emotions out as much as possible to get myself into the same mood too.

Good call…I think you are right…it is important to know that user and what’s the scenario. I think in footwear design its huge because shoes today are so lifestyle driven and specialized.

I’m not a Pro Footwear designer yet,but as a Design student, most of the time i dont do too many sketches (Maybe because i dont have too much time) I do the work mostly in my mind (use my imagination) and when i got something good ( an idea) i try to translate that by doing a drawing. At this point it is only a sketch, but i try to make that single sketch look as close as possible with the shoe that i have in my mind. Then, when i’m satisfy, i can now play around with the design of the shoe even more.

Opps i didn’t realize this is in the software/footware forum. I am not into shoe design though.

I don’t design things in my mind very much. I get an overall idea of what I want it to do, open up a brand new sketch pad, and just sketch. I’ll do 30-50 initial sketches going in all different directions, sketching out possible technologies, cross sections through things, parts, overall gestures.

I’ll let that sit for a day or so, come back to it, and pick 4 or 5 to develop further. I select them based on the simple principal of wild to mild. One very produceable one, one way, way out there one, and 2 or three in between. From here I will do 2-3 refinement sketches on each of those, pick the best of those to draw up again and throw some color on.

Beautiful sketches,

You are now saved to my HD.

Thanks for posting these up

Thanks!..Here is another. This one is different, almost sloppy…but I might do a bunch like this and then overlay the ones I like.

sure you did…come on over to the dark side fella!

thats sound pretty thorough! most of the time i try to think out some portion of the design in my head, in part because it takes awhile for my hands to catch up with my brain…though even when the idea finds its way through the travails of my head it inevitably gets lost when it gets on the paper…

cool sketches jm745, i noticed you have certain portions of your sketches encircled; is there a significance to this?

I do tend to circle portions of my sketches…its kinda my device to pull you in or add interest to certain parts of the page/composition. Sometimes I use it to emphasize something in particular…other times just for the heck of it…

heres a more fully rendered sketch…
