how much does a design educator make in different countries ? How long does an educator need to work in their area to get where he’s paid ?
For adjuncts and those who teach in Art Schools (no tenure) there is no formula, for university’s it’s a 7 year process (of publishing/practice/presentations) to get tenure: Assoc. Prof. and another 7 of the same process for the move up to full Professor.
Then it’s a matter if it’s a public or private school. I don’t have any numbers but understand its significantly below wages for practicing designers.
but once you’ve been in the field for many decades, if you’re nearing ‘retirement’ age but don’t feel done yet, it’s a great way to step back from the pressures of a full time gig (teach a couple classes, do a little freelance when the right project presents itself) but stay connected with the industry and share the knowledge you’ve accumulated.

am pretty shocked at the earnings. I know its lower but it should be just at US$40K. I think some educators make more than that if they are at a prestigious college or at a place where they shine and the college wants to keep them. In their spare time, I see a lot of them actually do freelance or tend to their part time consulting business.
I know there is a salary survey for design practitioners but not to educators.
Hence this thread.
