how far do you go in the process of a product?

So, right now, im barely learning about my career, almost halfway through to finishing school. Unfortunately there are not many ID´ers around my area and the very few ive met seem to have the idea that a designer takes care of making the design and just after his done, he turns it over to some engineer or whatever to process out the product and make it work, now i agree that we might need help from other people and disciplines to be able to really make a design the best possible way you can, but i disagree on the basic idea that was stated…

I believe that the designer has to be fully involved throughout the whole process, and be the leader…

I tend to agree with you on that although I do not know if that is the technical definition of a designer; although knowledge of every step of the product development process will most definitely make things run alot smoother.

For example I have noticed alot of people are getting into ID, mid-career, from other disciplines such as tool and die makers, architects and graphic designers.
