Im a high school senior and im lookin to go to art school…one problem i still seem to be having is taking thoughts from my head and putting them on paper…I have an idea of what I want each piece to come out like but I have a hard time putting it down…I do great when I have something in front of me that im drawing but I just cant pull stuff from my head…pleaseee help me out with this let me know what I can do to fix this! thanks
i am sure there is better advice but at this point i would say just keep drawing and have fun with it, i know it sounds lame…keep at it and over time you will notice improvement.
also maybe trying to draw things quickly, taking notice of the sipmle shapes that make up complex objects will help too
If you can draw stuff that is in front of you you’re off to a good start. JungleBrodda is on the mark. Draw, draw, draw.
First thing is not to be afraid of white paper … and you’re going to go through a lot of it. And draw big … don’t cramp down on your pencil and try to scrunch everything onto half of an 8.5x11.
Go to your local newspaper office and buy an ‘end roll’. They used to sell them; its the end of a roll of newsprint that they take off of the printing press just before it runs out. There is ususally a couple of hundred feet left, and they’re generally not too expensive. Tear off a two foot chunk and fill up every corner with whatever… If you can’t get an ‘end roll’ buy a ‘newsprint’ pad at an art supply store; it will be more expensive, but will still be the cheapest paper you can get.
Use pencils, fine tip ‘Sharpies’, cheap ass felt tip pens, charcoal, pastel ‘chalk’, and anything else you can find. At this point you’re after the basics.
Look for the simple shapes that make up complex objects (circles and spheres, square and boxes, cones and pyramids, cylinders, wedges, etc.)
For example: draw a ‘box’ and combine it with a wedge, draw a cylinder and add a half sphere to the top.
Are you taking any ‘art classes’ in school? Have you talked with an instructor in your high school’s art department?
thanks alot for the info…yea i acually am taking a few art classes…my school had a great art program…and im taking advanced art honors class, photography, and clay and sculpture…then I plan on majoring in industrial design somewhere
There are so many mediums out there. Play around with many things. Highschool is mostly pencils and papers, but if you move to college you will see that people will use all kinds of things, even garabage. So find what’s comfortable for you and what material does what for you.

When I was a kid, I was really into stippling. I would draw everything that way. I tried to get as realistic as I could. Most of my stuff didn’t have backgrounds, just the object I was drawing.
I got into graffiti in the early 80’s and this helped my drawing expand a lot.
I was focusing on making abstract letter forms that have never existed before. I was also into creating original character and coming up with styles that I have never seen.
What it did for me was to free me from the confines of real objects and the confines of the paper. I was painting 5-6 foot curvy letters in full color. You have to use your entire body when you paint. When I was drawing with the pen, I only used my hand.
I carried (and still do) a sketchbook everywhere. I drew all the time. One thing I learned is to not care about the quality of what comes out. Eventually, things will tighten up and all your stuff will be at a certain quality level.
Don’t be scared to go outside your comfort level.
