Hi I know this topic might be a bit wonky - after all, life in any city is what you make it - but I am thinking of relocating within the year from New York to another city in the US.
Since I freelance doing web design, I could potentially move almost anywhere, but I was wondering if any folks out there had any suggestions about cities that have decent art and design communities (musuems, galleries, stores, programs, professional organizations, etc.) as well as a lower cost of living than New York City…
Any thoughts? Wanna brag about your town? So far, I was thinking of Philly since it’s close to NYC but cheaper…
Do you always want to be doing web design? I am asking because you might want to choose a location where you can pick up another job later on incase web doesn’t work out for you in a couple yrs etc… So a place like New York, has many options for careers in design if you decided to get out of web. I would look into the city your thinking about relocating to and see what other job opportunities are there aswell.
Whatever you do, don’t move to philly…its really boring and has no design community whatsoever- it sucks, trust me. i heard canada is full of cool design cities. You also might want to try Boston?

That’s a tough question to answer, not really knowing much about you. But, if I had to throw a city out there, my vote would be Austin, TX…hands down. After living there for 3 yrs., I can say it is a really great place to live. I’m not sure what the current market is for web design, but there is a thriving art and design community, along with University of Texas, Dell, etc. etc., not to mention loads of design firms…Design Edge, M3, Frog…
