Fluffly Industrial Design VS Really good ID Schools.Mmmhh...

This Forum has been resourceful in my quest. really great…

So here is my question. I finally decided this year that I will study ID, the schools I like the most in the USA, from what i researched are:

University of Cincinnati
Pratt Institute
Art Center College of Design
Carnegie Mellon University (information i read suggest there is an multi/interdisciplinary approach)

(They don’t have a ID program but i think the Steven Institute for Innovation of the University of Southern California is doing great things)

The problem is it is now too late to apply for Fall 2009 to all those schools, I exchanged a few emails with SCAD and I they would still consider my application to start in Fall 2009.

The other option is Istituto Marangoni in Milan , they have a three year degree, BUT compared to the schools i mentioned before their program looks fluffy to me. I mean what will i learn in a 5 months semester in a course called Hi-Tech Design? Or furniture design in 5 months? They do not seem to give scientific preparation or educate on production process.
I want to do things right, does this look right to any of you? :unamused:
I don’t want to talk and talk and not have the know how.

The school has an excellent reputation for Fashion Design but i have been researching for months and can’t find opinions about the Product Design Course

I am not excited by the comments i read here about SCAD academics, and even if my education is the priority Savannah is not MILAN. I was thinking that i could do one year in Marangoni then transfer to a school in the USA, and that the European experience would be positive but i don’t know how compatible the programs woulds be. And i want to start in Fall(I am 26 and not getting any younger so i want to start asapi am changing from Law School. )

I would appreciate any comment about PD at Istituto Marangoni, advice or suggestion of alternative will all be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

OK

Art center accepts applications year round:

there are rolling admissions at a number of schools, but I’d advise going to a university v art school - there’s more to explore.

Do you have a portfolio?

Most undergrad programs will take in students year around. Spending a year in Italy, or anywhere overseas is actually the best thing you can do for yourself, there is nothing more enriching that spending time in another culture and learning a new language. That alone will make up for how good or bad that particular school might be.
As far as the duration of the program keep in mind that European diplomas are structured a very different way than the U.S. The first university cycle in Most European country is 3 years as oppose to 4 years. This is due in part to the fact that the last year in hi school in Europe correspond to the first freshman year in a U.S college. I am originally from France and when I attended college in the U.S I started as a Sophomore, not a Freshman.

Since you mention Art Center as one of your choices, you could enroll in Art Center at night. Most student that enter Art Center either have already a degree in design, or built their portfolio by taking foundation classes through Art Center at Night, most student will do 6 month to a year before applying. The great thing is it give you a chance to get a feel for I.D without paying full price and you will build a very good portfolio that you can use to apply to other school as well. Some of the classes are transferable, or partly transferable to the full fledge program.

Thanks for the answers

I am really tempted by Milan and i looove traveling, and how it can widens horizons but i do not second your view that traveling will make up, for how good or bad a school is. That might me be somewhat true for Liberal Arts but not for Industrial design. I’d rather acquire the skills first, then travel.

And like someone advised I agree a University would be better.

The feel, elegance, and use of something is important as the itch I feel for making, adding, deconstructing, rebuilding (concepts, silhouette, materials, their feel and colors ) until i feel its right, or the question “Damn i want to know how to make tubular steel bend” i can learn all that in an art/design school … (i guess) but i also I want to know how things work and would like to take some science classes. (chemistry, some engineering/prod. methods, human factors/ergonomics)

  • even though i am proactive, i have a “stimulating/creative/bright teacher who place the bar high” fetish and i love to be surrounded with bright people.

What can i say… i like it rough

When in contacted Art center two week ago, someone told me on the phone it was too late to apply, however i called again today and they said i can still apply, so i am doing that. so thanks for telling me.
I have a portfolio in development.

Ps: Cincinnati or CMU were my first options but its definitely too late for fall

Hey … i didn’t mean art center, i am talking about ACCD, Art Center College of Design

Someone just me sent this: it’s sounding really inspiring

VS

its been talked over and over here , but this does not sound right

Most school if not all schools will still consider applicants once the deadline is past, the only draw back is that you would probably be too late to be considered for potential scholarships.

As far as SCAD, don’t get me going on that school, I visited it a couple of month ago and wasn’t enthusiastic by the school whatsoever. But those two schools can’t really be compared, Art Center is rated number one Grad. I.D. program in the country and deliver a Master of Science, SCAD isn’t even on the list of the top 10 school in the country and delivers and MFA. Art Center is a 3 years program ( which can be done in 2 years (6x15 weeks) ) SCAD is 4 semesters ( 4x10weeks.). Art center has a total of 90 weeks of education versus 40 weeks for scad, that 's a huge difference.

So what school will you be attending SomewhereinLa, well if i may know.

Thanks for the comments guys.
Been helpful

Going to Art Center. I really wanted to move back to the East Coast though… But Art Center is rated #1 program for the I.D grad. program. It’s the only program that’s 3 years ( it can be done in two if you stay on the Summers), they have a very powerful Alumni and I really like the curriculum.

I Like it too, i’m finishing the portfolio then mailing it.
So… will you be going to Art Center?

Yes, starting this Fall. I even got a scholarship

Good for you!
