Ethnographic Studies For Designers

I have been working as a designer for over 5 years now and been exposed to both consultancy and corporate environments, here in the USA and also Europe. I have worked in environments that rely totally on designers to come up with creative design solutions among them selves in brain storming sessions. Conversly, I have worked closely with Ethnographers, who have provides me with insight information into my design problems.

Having worked this way, it is hard to believe that designers still work in isolation from consumers, are we witnessing a change in the way designers are working?

I would like to hear any comments on this subject.
