I am certain I want to study an art/design career when I go to college in a year. I know there are ID college programs that place less emphasis on engineering and more on art. However, when I would graduate in four years, would I need to have a lot of knowledge about engineering? Thanks!

Wouldn’t hurt to inform yourself, but its not completely required. Although it does certainly depend on what you are going to be doing.

and where you want to go.

designers without good engineering and manufacturing knowledge either lean towards marketing/branding or just stay as pure designers, in my experience. the former helps, the latter you hit a ceiling and start to flounder. good designers accomplish all three and more.

Thanks for the advice! I’m leaning more towards interior and textile design.

Yeah, then I wouldn’t lose sleep over not being able to perform stress calculations on the bicycle crank arm you just developed.
