Always hard to say with the camo on. If this was an electric version of a Kia Stinger I’d be pretty amped, and that is not meant as a dig, I think the Stinger was a very cool car especially for the price. From what is shown here it doesn’t necessarily scream Jaguar, but Jag has had tough times for years (decades?) so maybe a drastic departure was called for.
I think one of the critical errors for Jaguar in the past is it didn’t evolve enough. This might be swinging the pendulum too far in my opinion. But I thought the same of their last generation of sedans which also were quite angular (compared to Jaguar sedans of the 80’s through early 2000s).
TLDR if this product fails I think it will have less to do with it being an EV and more to do with it being a Jaguar sedan at a super high price point.
I look forward to seeing it in person as always, but unfortunately I think the $130k price point on these will make it pretty irrelevant either way.
I imagine that Jaguar will make this car for 10 years, like they did the last XF. That makes it more of a challenge than BMW/Merc/Audi, who can afford to make at least one model change in that time frame. I think that’s why Jags always look a little old, because for half the life cycle, they are old.
The proportions here look very close to the Type 00 concept’s. I do like them, but details matter even more on these very simple blocky cars. They have the experience of doing details well, but we shall see if that continues!
hard to think why they thought any $172k vehicle would help them, but I guess it makes it real easy to spot the oligarchs. I think the design works nicely overall. Imagine if this was a Chrysler 300.
if it was a 2-seater ‘shooting brake’ kind of size that might be OK. Maybe the chopped-off tail helps aerodynamics some… IDK I see EV’s as figurative vehicles for arbitrary rolling sculpture that do little to advance accessibility, affordability, driving or vehicle performance… almost like being ‘freed’ of trying to meet mileage goals by omitting the ICE gives brands freedom to cast aside rationality. f the oligarchs.
It does remind me of the Cybertruck, which turned out to be a huge failure. The Jag might yet succeed though. I’ve read that Jag knows it can’t be a mass market make anymore and they want to move upmarket where selling a few thousand a year can be good business. At that price, people have second, third, fourth cars for going to the shops, so they don’t need to make this car reasonable. Also, I’ve read that Ferrari is happy with their Luce order book. I guess that means there are enough crypto bros with more money than taste ready to drop money on anything rare.
Onto the design though: the exterior is weirdly disappointing to me. I read about the rear quarter panel being incredibly hard to make because of the form. My first thought was, “why bother?” The old Cadillac CTS had a hard to press detail on its fender that stood out as a detail. This quarter panel? I forgot what it looked like already.
The rear is OK. Kind of retro in a way. Front looks like the car is camouflaged. I actually like the embossed rectangles for a grille, but everything is so square as to look cheap. The interior is a catastrophe to me. I would compare it to my doctor’s office, but that’s unfair to my doctor’s office. The centre console in the Jag looks like a gurney in a morgue. Who approved of this?
