It’s very much a 1966 car, no power steering, drum breaks with no power assist, original well worn manual transmission… but it is very endearing that is for sure! It is more of a budget conversion vs the more “show ready” $80k Beetles that Zelectric does.

This vehicle is low-hanging fruit. A rechargeable compact workhorse. Should be a hit in many markets.

I wonder if this thing will be around in 5 years. The weird thing is, there are a lot of car factories in Mexico making globally competitive vehicles. Why does this thing appear like something slapped together with spare parts?
Probably because it’s $8k… but it looks a lot better as a truck for sure.

I’m not holding my breath. I think Canada is using this China deal as leverage on Trump. The Big 3, and everyone who works for them, know that Canada is their biggest market outside the US now. Already, Hyundai/Kia is killing it in the EV market (at least in Quebec). If China comes in hard, it will wipe out the Big 3 permanently from Canada, imho. Michigan will be 70% Democrat for decades…
Canada’s reduction on tariffs for Chinese cars has been in place for six months so we have already been selling Chinese cars (mostly CHinese-made teslas since they already have dealers and comply with local safety regulations) and other manufacturers have been busy building dealer networks and getting approvals. Even if it ends up being short-lived, we will see Chinese cars sold in Canada.

Polestar/Volvo, Tesla and Lotus are currently importing. I suspect someone else is getting ready, but I read conflicting reports about dealer networks. Also, it’s only on 69k cars in a market of 1.9 million, so the low tariff cars will run out quickly. I think the government is already trying to cap it for Tesla because they did sell 54k cars here in 2024, so one company could blow through the tariff quota by itself.
I can still see the US and Canada agreeing to keep the quota low or going back to 100% tariff in return for the US respecting the USMCA, just not under this admin.
Yeah exactly, we’ll see either status quo or looser restrictions on imports of Chinese vehicles for at least 2 years. The rumours about BYD are pretty compelling, I expect they’ll have a couple of dealerships selling vehicles by early next year.

Without the break version it’s not interesting. And kind of ugly from every angle.
The break, available in Europe, would be a good replacement for the AllTrack Golf, missed a lot here.

It’s a weird looking car, but it gives me Saab vibes in its quirkiness. The 80s 900 had long overhangs and some unique design details too. Also, Kia’s wheel designer has been having a run that I haven’t seen since the glory days of Saab.

Honestly I’m very confused by this. I thought the GT was the name of the hatchback version, but the Canadian announcement for the GT shows a front view of what seems to be the sedan. It looks like they haven’t announced the hatchback variant at all in Canada which is disappointing. I’m partial to the hatchback and would even consider buying it depending on the price and range.
All of Kia’s new designs are weird, striking and show a lot of visual consistency and confidence. All that and they are doing very well selling their vehicles.
