Designers and Beer...What's yours

I am loving this thread because I am a firm believer that beer is every as classy as wine, but with a far greater variety in taste. (braces self for backlash from wine snobs) Just like with wine food pairing is very important for beer. i drink a very different beer with chicken or steak, but my favorite is the session beer.

If I’m feeling particularly flush with cash, I reach for:

Olde Suffolk

Or the classic Samuel Smiths Oatmeal Stout

But usually, I’ll drink what ever is available. I’m certainly no beer snob by any means.
Grain Belt Premium
Molson Canadian
Red Hook ESB
Newcastle
Guinness
Murphy’s
Fat Tire
the list goes on and on

We’ve just recently got Bell’s Oberon the last year or so. Hadn’t heard of it before reading the previous beer appreciation posts. The 5 liter mini keg is perfect for summer weekends.

Here’s the usual suspects for me.
Whistler Brewing Black Tusk.jpg
Whistler Brewing - Black Tusk
Kilkenny - Irish Cream Ale
Okanagan Spring - Pale Ale
Okanagan Spring - 1516
Granville Island - Honey Lager
Sleeman - Honey Brown
Alexander Keith’s - IPA
Kokanee

Not trying to start a fight here but I have two questions:

1:

I’ve always viewed Stella as “Bud Light with a nice dress on” if your in Belgium why not drink the abbey ales and leave the Pilsners to Germany and Bohemia?

2: I’d have to say in the past the west coast may have been better but the east coast has certainly caught up and offers in my opinion a more diverse array of beer styles Not just “imgonnaputabunsloadofhopsinhere beer” which I have found so often in west coast beers.

@bennybtl - Number 9 is a great beer but Magic Hat annoys me. Every time i get into one of their beers they go and axe it. I remember Ravel, their porter, was one of my absolute favorite beers and they discontinued it as they do with alot of their beers.

Also the Smoked Marzen offered by Schlenkerla, i think thats the brewery, is awesome. If you can ever dream of not drinking all of it, it makes an awesome base for chili.

Has anyone else tried Midas Touch from Dogfish head?

Born in Belgium… where should I start

And many, many, MANY, many more…

If anyone of you ever comes to Belgium… search for a real beer café and if you’re lucky you’ll find places with +500 types of beers

The NW definitely has a great assortment of Microbrews.
Fav Pale Ale - Mannys
Fav Brewery - Elysian, Seattle - not a bad beer on tap
Fav IPA - Red Chair IPA, Deschutes Brewing
Fav Wheat Beer - not a NW but tasty in the summer. Kona Brewery Wailua Wheat.
Fav Lager - Stella
Fav Cheap Beer - OK its got to be ICE COLD and HOT as HELL outside - Bud light. What? I grew up in Hawaii…it the official drink of the islands…no really.

Im sure more to come later…

Lagunitas will ruin Sierra Nevada for you, it did for me.

EDIT: As long as I’m talking them up I may as well direct here http://www.lagunitas.com/beers/index.html

And provide you with an awesome quote from their website, “Lagunitas Brewing Company is emerging as a battle-tested brewery capable of making great beer out of goat’s milk, brambles, and asphalt on the surface of the Moon, if need be.”

Yes, it sure will. I’d highly recommend any sierra nevada fans to try this beer. (I know from experience) I’ll order it whenever I see it.
Like all things, much better on tap.

Coors Light?

Most of the local NY stuff has been treating me good these days:

Ommegang Hennepin
Brooklyn Local 1 & 2
Bluepoint Toasted Lager and Hoptical Illusion

Of course good old fashioned Yuengling is my usual weapon of choice. Cheap, tasty and readily available.

You know, as practically the oldest beer in the country, they have a pretty shallow distribution chain. My old roommate would have his future in-laws smuggle it from Virginia all the time. So good.

For the summer it’s Granville Island Brewery’s Hefeweizen with a lemon:

in the city:

at the beach:

czech holidays:

A good beer must be made of natural ingredients. No artificial flavours, no marketing bull, =
a great taste and no headache in the morning…

Funny. I had a “Czechvar” a few weeks ago. I wonder if they taste any different. I’m guessing yes.

Racer 5 anyone?

I like Sierra Nevada, so it looks like I’ll be picking up some Lagunitas on my way home.

I’m trying to branch out and try different beers. Haven’t found a ton of things I enjoy yet. Maybe I can get some suggestions from all of you here.

Currently some of my favs are.

Yuengling
312
Stella Artois
Dos XX’s Lager
Duvel
Tripel Karmeliet

Maybe, I can get some suggestions based off of these beers.

I think the best way to figure out what you like is to find a restaurant or bar that has a huge variety of beers and just start working your way through them.

Not sure where you are located at so here are some places to check into.

If you have an Old Chicago in your area you can do an incentive based 110 beer tour to help you out.

or Yard House (massive selection of beers on tap)
http://www.yardhouse.com/default.aspx

or The Flying Saucer (great already choice of tap and bottle beers)

straight out of the 'Zoo (area)

Bell’s
-Oberon
-Kalamazoo Stout
-Hop Slam (10% alcohol by volume, so be advised and don’t let it catch you off guard)
-Porter

back to the Chi (area)

Two Brothers
-Cane and Ebel

Goose Island

  • Matilda
    -312

Others come to mind, but most have been listed already, time to open this Oberon.

I picked up a couple of 6-packs of Bell’s Amber Ale and the Kalamazoo Stout when I was up in Grand Rapids for the furniture comp and those were some nice beers. I wish I would have brought more back with me.
