I know this has proally been asked before, I tried searching and have been contacting schools but no luck yet except schools in the UK… I am looking for a English speaking Graphic Design or Advertising school in Europe.
I was born in Finland, lived for 13 years in USA and now have moved back to Finland… being unsucessful with finding a Graphic Design job here (I had a job back overseas and have a Certificate of Completition for a 4 year program in Commerical Arts/Graphic Design), so I am looking for Universities now.
Industrial Design schools would also be of interest. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Edit: I was really interested in IAAD in Italy but they teach in Italian… Id prefer something not in the UK (I just believe Id feel more comfortable in Italy or such).
perhaps, after you do a little work and find out for yourself what english-taught schools there are to choose from, you can come back and ask which ones people recommend…
Not that I can claim much knowledge across europe, but I did study abroad in your backyard (finland). UIAH (University of Art + Design, Helsinki) offers all of their graduate programs in english.
For what it’s worth… You might not have to look too far.
Nice reply, Ive been spending the past week pretty much constantly searching for them… Ive searched here and other people are asking the same question.

How did you like UIAH? I contacted them before and they said that undergrad courses require Finnish or Swedish.
It’s hard for me to judge the undergrad. Our study-abroad program put me into the graduate courses (because of language, of course). I can say that I was impressed by the school. I studied in the industrial design program, but there were a lot of opportunities to work in groups or projects involving people from graphics, furniture, new media, various fine-arts disciplines…the school even has a complete TV studio!
So far as I know UIAH is most reputable for their New Media department, however I could not find fault with any of the departments I had the opportunities to work with(in).
Plus it’s a relatively small school, offering some really great interaction with the faculty. The Finnish winters are the worst part (as I’m sure you already know)
I was thinking that you already had a 4year certificate and that you might be considering a graduate program. I have some friends that attended some schools in Germany and Switzerland (I can’t remember the names off the top of my head), but they would be worth researching as well.
My instinct tells me that you might have trouble locating an undergrad program that teaches in english in a non-english speaking country. I’d say your best bet is to apply to a graduate program and if there are any courses you need to catch up on at the undergrad level then find an english speaking buddy in those classes and sponsor their coffee habit in return for translated notes or something.
All the schools in England teach in English, obviously. Also UMEA (in Sweden) has a VERY good reputation and their classes are taught in English, although you do have to take an obligatory Swedish class at the beginning of your studies.
Just to give you an example of the situation here in Germany: it is required by law that you prove German fluency before you could even be accepted into an undergrad program (just like everybody who wants to study in the U.S. has to pass the TOEFL test). The reasoning may be that if you study here, you pay no tuition, so your education would be paid for by German tax payers…
Like it or not.
Before I studied at Umea Design Institute, I had seen many articles on this school on famous design web sites, like core77. So, I thought Umea Design Institute could be the school, where I can learn so many things during my master study. When I was in Umea, I realised that Umea Design Institute has many relationship with media, so this school has used media for advetising Umea Design Institute. Also, some designers grasuating from that school have advertised this school indirectly here. Be careful!!! Umea design institute is the worst!!! Even in Sweden this school is rated on third stage.
