DESIGN SCHOOLS: IDEAS/DESIGNS/VISIONS

HERE’S SOME IDEAS/DESIGNS/VISIONS FOR CONSIDERATION:

DESIGN IS PERSONAL AND THEREFORE PERSONALLY SUBJECTIVE-
FOR ALL INVOLVED.

DESIGN IS A REFLECTION OF ALL INVOLVED.

AS DESIGN IS A REFLECTION, DESIGN REFLECTS THE PERSONALITY OF THE DESIGNER.

AS ONE IS EXPLORING THE OPPORTUNITY TO GO FOR A DESIGN SCHOOL- AS A PROSPECTIVE STUDENT, STAFF, FACULTY, ADMINISTRATION, OR WHATEVER FORM OF MEMBERSHIP- ONE MAY CONSIDER THE OVERALL VISION OF THE SCHOOL.

THE VISION IS THE ATTITUDE OF THE SCHOOL.

THE VISION IS A REFLECTION OF THE WAY AND MANNER OF DESIGN.

THE WAY AND MANNER OF DESIGN IS THE WHOLE PROCESS OF DESIGN- FROM START TO CONCLUSION- AND ACTIONS AND CONSEQUENCES FOLLOWING THE CONCLUSION.

IF ONE HAS AN ESTABLISHED PERSONAL DESIGN VISION AND AN ESTABLISHED PERSONAL ATTITUDE, THEN IT MAY BE IDEAL TO EXPLORE THE VARIETY OF POTENTIAL RELATIONSHIP DYNAMICS BETWEEN ONESELF AND THE PROSPECTIVE SCHOOL.

IF ANY POINTS OR ISSUES ARE ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO ONESELF, CHECK TO SEE THE SCHOOL’S POSITION REGARDING THE SAME TO SEE IF WHATEVER MAY BE IMPORTANT TO ONESELF IS ALSO IMPORTANT TO THE SCHOOL.

GO ON THE EXPLORATION- STEP BY STEP- STARTING WITH THE EXPLORATION A WIDE VARIETY OF SCHOOLS AND MAKING ONE’S WAY ALL THE WAY TO THE ONE IDEAL PROSPECTIVE SCHOOL.

AT SOME POINT, ONE HAS GOT TO GO FOR IT- ONE WAY OR ANOTHER.

EITHER GO FOR THE SCHOOL THAT ONE MAY CONSIDER TO BE THE MOST CONSISTENT WITH ONESELF AND ONE’S PERSONAL VISION, GO WITH THE SCHOOL THAT ONE CONSIDERS TO HAVE THE STRONGEST FOCUS ON THE MOST SIGNIFICANT POINT OR ISSUE TO ONESELF AND ONE’S PERSONAL VISION, OR GO WITH SOME OTHER WAY- WHATEVER IS IDEAL FOR YOU.

FOR EXAMPLE, REGARDING OVERALL VISION:

PEOPLE HAVE A PERSONAL VISION AND THE DESIGNER MAKES HIS/HER VISION OF THE DESIGN SOLUTION AS AN EXPRESSION OF HIS/HER PHYSICAL, INTELLECTUAL, AND SPIRTUAL CONSCIOUSNESS.

DESIGN IS SIMILAR TO ART- HOWEVER, IN SOME WAY, IT MAY HAVE A STRONGER FOCUS ON A UNIQUE FUNCTIONAL INTENT AND APPLICATION.

CONSIDER THE ETHICAL, MORAL, AND SPIRITUAL VISION OF THE DESIGNER.

THEN, CONSIDER THE POLITICAL VISION OF THE DESIGNER.

OF COURSE THE TWO SETS OF VISIONS ARE DIRECTLY AND INDIRECTLY RELATED.

SOME DESIGN SETTING HAVE SO MANY NON-DESIGNERS INVOLVED THAT THE DESIGNER’S ROLE IS SIGNIFICANTLY CHALLENGED AND/OR LIMITED AND, THEREFORE, IN A WAY, THE DESIGNER IS- TO SOME EXTENT- SOME FORM OF EXECUTOR OF THE WILL OF OTHERS INVOLVED IN THE PROCESS.

FOR A REAL WORLD DESIGN PROFESSION EXAMPLE:

THE PRESIDENT OF THE CLIENT COMPANY PREFERS YELLOW ON BLUE FOR THE PRODUCT’S INTERACTIVE CONTROL SCREEN GRAPHICS AND TEXT BECAUSE YELLOW ON BLUE IS HIS PERSONAL FAVORITE COLOR SCHEME- REGARDLESS OF SIGNIFICANT DESIGNER CONSIDERATION, EXPLORATION, AND JUSTIFICATION THAT USING THE COLOR SCHEME IS LIKELY TO SIGNIFICANTLY LIMIT THE QUALITY OF THE USER’S EXPERIENCE WITH THE PRODUCT.

REGARDING A MORE DESIGNER-CONTROLLED SETTING:

IN SOME WAY A MORE LIBERAL LEFT DESIGNER MAY BE MORE LIKELY TO OFFER DESIGNS THAT ARE MORE LIBERAL AND LEFT- JUST LIKE A DESIGNER THAT IS MORE CONSERVATIVE RIGHT MAY BE MORE LIKELY TO OFFER DESIGNS THAT ARE MORE CONSERVATIVE AND RIGHT.

CAN ONE IMAGINE HOW TO OBSERVE, EXPERIENCE, AND EXPRESS ONE’S IMPRESSION OF A DESIGN?

THERE’S A LOT TO IT ALL AND THERE’S A WIDE VARIETY OF POTENTIAL FORMS OF EXPRESSION.

GOOD. BAD. STRONG. CHEAP. SMALL. BIG. WEIRD. BORING. AND SO ON…

IS THIS AS FAR AS IT GOES?

IT’S UP TO THE PARTIES INVOLVED AND WHATEVER THEY HAVE TO OFFER TO MAKE OF IT ALL.

IT MAY GO EVEN FURTHER…

MAINSTREAM. CLASSIC. RETRO. FUTURISTIC. AND SO ON…

AND AGAIN, IT MAY GO EVEN FURTHER…

DESIGNS MAY EVEN BE CONSIDERED LIBERAL AND LEFT OR CONSERVATIVE AND RIGHT.

IN SOME WAY A MORE LIBERAL LEFT DESIGNER MAY BE MORE LIKELY TO OFFER DESIGNS THAT ARE MORE LIBERAL AND LEFT- JUST LIKE A DESIGNER THAT IS MORE CONSERVATIVE RIGHT MAY BE MORE LIKELY TO OFFER DESIGNS THAT ARE MORE CONSERVATIVE AND RIGHT.

DESIGNS ARE MADE TO BE AND BECOME REFLECTIONS AND EXTENSIONS OF THE DESIGNER’S PERSONAL IMPRESSION OF THE APPROPRIATE DESIGN SOLUTION- CONSCIOUSLY AND/OR UNCONSCIOUSLY FORMED BY THE DESIGNER AND ALL INVOLVED IN THE DESIGN EXPERIENCE, INCLUDING THE DESIGNER, USER, AND OBSERVERS- DIRECT AND INDIRECT.

FOR A REAL WORLD DESIGN SCHOOL EXAMPLE:

SETTING- DESIGN SCHOOL STUDIO

THE DESIGN STUDENT STATES THAT HE CHOSE TO PLACE THE CONTROL BUTTON HERE, OFF-CENTER AND ASYMMETRICAL- AS, EVEN THOUGH IT MADE SENSE TO PLACE IT ON-CENTER AND SYMMETRICAL, THAT WAS JUST BORING, SO HE CHOSE TO PLACE IT OFF-CENTER AND ASYMMETRICAL- JUST TO BE DIFFERENT FOR A DIFFERENT LOOK.

THE DESIGN TEACHER RESPONDED THAT SHE AGREED WITH THE DESIGN STUDENT AND EXPRESSED HER APPRECIATION AND AGREEMENT WITH THE DESIGN STUDENT’S DESIGN SOLUTION IN THIS REGARD.

AND ANOTHER DESIGN STUDENT- OBSERVING ALL THIS- WONDERS WHAT CHANCE HE’S GOT TO EXPLORE HIS VISION IN A SETTING THAT APPEARS TO HONOR A DESIGN VISION THAT’S SIGNIFICANTLY DIFFERENT THAN HIS- AS HE WOULD HAVE THE CONTROL BUTTON ON-CENTER AND SYMMETRICAL.

SOME DESIGN PROJECTS DIRECTLY REFLECT THE DESIGNER’S UNIQUE AND SPECIAL APPRECIATION FOR SOME VISION- AND THEN, TO THE OPPOSITE- SOME DESIGN PROJECTS GENERALLY REFLECT A WIDE VARIETY OF FORMS OF APPRECIATION OF A WIDE VARIETY OF PEOPLE’S VISIONS- ALL INTO ONE DESIGN.

JUST LIKE DESIGN, JUST LIKE ART…

DESIGN…

IT’S WHATEVER YOU MAKE OF IT.
