Design related books I want to read.... at some point.

Went to the MIT press bookstore today… and I overloaded on books I want to read as they relate to what we do. Thought I would start a list. feel free to add.

Some of those look pretty interesting !, I judge books by their covers

All the design books i have seen are sooooo expensive though !

By the way, Remix is available online as a PDF under the Creative Commons license here: http://www.bloomsburyacademic.com/remix.htm

good post. I normally am not a fan of these type of books, but might check some out.

PS> I do the same thing when I’m in a book store. snap a pic with my iPhone to be able to find it later. Pure geek. Love it.

One great app (there are a few that do the same thing) you might want to check out is Cyclops. It’s a free app that lets you take a pic of the bar code and then it searches amazon and other places and gives you the full info on the title (description, author, etc. and even a direct link to the amazon store). works pretty amazingly. Also works for things that are not books I believe.

I also use Delicious Library (there was an iPhone app, but not sure if it’s still available - taken down by Amzaon to TOS issues). You can scan your books at home with your webcam, then it gives you a visual shelf with all your books that show the covers and full info pulled from Amazon. You can/could sync with the iPhone to be able to carry around a fully searchable DB of all the books you already have (also movies and CDs), so you don’t buy a book you already have. I think it’s the only piece of SW I’ve ever purchased.

rkuchinsky I have used Delicious Library, it has a beautiful user interface, i have all my CD’s on there and i will add my gadgets soon.

I dont really need it, it just looks so nice

Nice list, thanks for posting Yo…

Got a similar list on my amazon wish list, its a bit of a mix of business and philosophy but the majority are design related. Feel free to get me a gift  There’s something about buying a book for me that beats taking it out of the library, I hate the thought of not having a book to refer to whenever I need to.

Interesting, I too normally stay away from design related books. I personally find them a bit preachy. God i stuggled with Donald Norman.

I was wondering if any body else reads travel books? I often enjoy reading about other peoples travels and expereinces with a bit of comedy and humour mixed in the story. Comedy and humour make it lighter to read yet the backbone of the story is a 300 page real life encounter of trials and tribulations.

I hear you Bogey man on the whole renting thing. I want that knowledge with me all the time, I dont want to read it and then have to give it back. I want to be able to refer to that knowledge as an when.

I enjoy the classics. These guys really knew their craft

Designing for People - Henry Dreyfuss - In my opinion, this is a must read for any designer.

Design this Day - Walter Dorwin Teague - A more challenging read from the man dubbed the dean of industrial design, great insight on the philosophy of design

Books I Want to Read Some Day

  • 80% of the ones I’ve bought because they had pretty pictures and appealing typography.

I hear ya!!
