One of my favorites:
“Have no fear of perfection – you’ll never reach it.” – Salvador Dali
Yes! I have so much trouble sometimes, especially with young footwear designers, helping them understand that their job is to create amazing products, not simply amazing drawings of products.
I have a quote I want to add but I don’t know the source but I believe I read it on Core77 in an interview with an Italian car designer.
“No Industry, No Industrial Design”
I’ve always kept this one in mind, courtesy of my freshman high school English teacher (feel free to replace fiction with design.)
“Nothing happens by accident in a work of fiction.”
love that!
Good? I just don’t want to suck. iab
Bill Purcell, Henry Dreyfuss’ partner would walk by my drawing board, yes this was long ago, look over my shoulder and ask me “is it as beautiful as it looks?”
a classic Paul Rand quote… one I use, or paraphrase, when explaining to clients why an expedient decision in the moment that detracts from the product or brand might have long term negative effects, or at the very least be a missed opportunity to further the brand. I like to say the product is your biggest form of marketing…
That’s so true! I tend to get caught in the sketching phase because my sketches look so pretty and I don’t have to think about what is actually feasible or not. It’s the products that actually become tangible objects that begin to make a difference.
