Design Director / job description

Doing some research and wondering if anyone has information or overall guidelines for for a Design Director

I am looking at various description and trying to piece one together that would fit for the company I am currently at.

Here is a bit from my past lives:

Design Director: Responsible for managing two or more professional employees who perform related and/or diverse tasks within the XXXXXX Group. Work is focused on short and long-term planning, impact to the bottom line, and execution brand strategies. Makes decisions and recommendations that have a direct and significant impact on own business unit and may impact the broader business and brand. Also, responsible for applying advance and diversified concepts, cross category product story understanding, theories, principles, practices and insights through high-level product design. Demonstrates design leadership by creating product each season.

People Management - Manages team and sets team and individual goals. Coaches staff, creates opportunities for staff development, and makes decisions or collaborates on hiring decisions, disciplinary actions, performance management, and recognition and rewards. Resolves employee relations issues and supports diversity. Develops team structure that facilitates and maximizes individual and team performance. Establishes team support.

Manages category design resources, processes, and customer/client relations to ensure project standards and timelines are met. Reviews design directions and resource applications with divisional Creative Director. Advocates for category HRP, design resources and provides ongoing performance management to Design staff.

Product Planning – Collaborates with Design, Development and Product Management to focus product designs for market success. Creates new cross-categorical merchandising opportunities. Actively seeks expert input to develop appropriate designs with regard to cost/value, fit and performance, manufacturability, sustainability, merchandising and aesthetic finish. Creates new practices, processes and design applications to increase product value and performance. Shares experience and expertise across category design group that contributes to overall product leadership position.

Product Design Creation - Creates and manages own seasonal/annual project load, for a limited number per season, within the overall design workload of the category or group. May work on cross-categorical projects that support design or creative initiatives and innovation that advance XXXXX’s design image and inspires targeted consumers.

Presentations & Communication
Communicates design vision, results, and stories to a variety of audiences (internal/external) informally and at a high level. Manages the presentation of projects at all stages, design reviews, sales meetings, customer/client interaction, adoption processes, etc.

Business Management - Develops, manages, and operationalizes short-term goals critical to the performance team’s success. Identifies key marketplace trends and develops recommendations to enhance the organization’s position. Develops or participates in business planning, budgeting, performance targets, and policy development. Participates in functional discussions and initiatives across departments. Utilizes internal and/or external partnerships that leverage resources and enhance business group effectiveness.

Creates the short and long term design vision and strategies for XXXX. Develops strong consumer-oriented points of view and leads the design team in executing the vision in seasonal product launches. Leads or participates in Key Brand and Product Initiatives – design through execution. Champions product design integrity, encompassing innovation, quality and performance. Drives the commercial portfolio with other members of the category and divisional leadership teams.

Skill Development - Represents assigned area of responsibility in a management and professional capacity. Collaborates with design leadership and the category leadership team and across the global matrix to increase efficiencies and ensure design excellence. Builds own technical skills parallel to the designer and industry skills direction

Min Skills:
Communication/Language: Strong verbal and written communication skills in local market language, including meeting facilitation and presentations. Ability to effectively communicate complex and/or controversial topics and concepts to a wide and diverse audience. Ability to effectively elevate strategic concerns to senior management in a timely and accurate manner. Ability to develop strong working relationships with management and external resources. Strong knowledge of cross team collaboration. Sound judgment and ability to provide information toward the determination of policy and strategy. Ability to exercise high degree of professionalism.

Management/Leadership (if applicable): Strong understanding and application of managerial concepts and techniques in areas such as project/change management, idea creation, employee development, coaching, and cross-team effectiveness. Demonstrated leadership in fostering continuous learning, empowerment, involvement, and opportunities. Ability to establish an independent view, effectively collaborate in decision-making, and motivate others, especially during difficult situations or on tough organizational issues. Ability to provide inspiration.
