I was wondering… will there ever be a Core77 iPhone App? I think it would be a great idea. It could look like this?
Maybe we could have a design competition for the logo?

what would the app do?
It would be connected to the ‘discussions’ part of the site.
Core77 already has an icon, it appears in the address bar on the main site (but not here–that’s something we should fix!) You’ll also see this icon if you add core77 to your iPhone home screen (navigate to core77 in Safari, then hit the + key and choose “Add to Home Screen.”
I’d argue that what we really need is a mobile version of this site that’s iPhone friendly. You’d navigate to this site, and it would auto-detect and re-route you to a “m.” version of the site, where the CSS is optimized for the mobile form-factor. Supposedly there are developers doing this with phpBB, which is the software that runs these boards. I’ve been looking into it and will mention it to Will.
personally i hate m. mobile versions of websites, especially when they automatically redirect you. the whole thing about the iphone is the browser is so good you don’t need some cripppled mobile site.
the only thing that would be good (and it bugs me even when viewing on the computer) is that when you click on a discussion from the sidebar of the front core77 page, it takes you to the first pages in the thread. it should go to the last. it’s a pain to click the link, then have to click again to get to the end of it. even moreso from the iphone where you gotta zoom in to click the page number.

That bothers me as well.
I think the iPhone app would make it easer to view the discussions page if that’s all it was used for. There’s a ton of info the phone needs to download before you can view the discussions page. You can also improve where you zoom in to click the page number. It’s the same reason for the Facebook app… You can’t use all the functions of the website, just the most used ones.
maybe I could see that. Though in a way would be better if just the whole discussions site was redone to make the UI better while also keeping in mind mobile browsing…

Well, if you’re going to open the can of worms…
The last few years have seen some dramatic changes in the way that people converse online. The concept of “bulletin boards” is being replaced by new social-network paradigms. On sites like LinkedIn or Facebook, you can create and join ‘groups’ and conversations you participate in are tracked, and appear right on your homepage. This is nice because you don’t have to hunt for new posts, they’re just provided to you.
Thoughts?
I don’t hunt for new posts, I just click the “find new posts button”
Maybe that shift will change, but I don’t think the bulletin board is going to vanish just yet. Theres a ton of mindshare on here in old posts that is still new to lots of people.
And that’s a good point to consider. Though bulletin boards are currently “quaint” they are much better for storing and archiving conversations over time, where new stuff like facebook updates and twitter are here today gone tomorrow.
With that said, I’d love an interface that can plug into something like the iphone or tweetdeck and see live comments as they are posted.

That’s a great idea! It would be easier to track the conversations you are in and the discussions you are interested in.
