I wanted to introduce myself. I’m Terry Price, Director of the Composite Training Center at Cerritos College. I’ve been doing this for over 30 years and have taught the basics as well as all-the-way-up to training Composites to new-hires to engineers at Lockheed, Northrop Grumman and Boeing.
We’ve put together this “Open House” to show you what we’re all about and what we can do for you. The Surfboard Construction Seminar will give an overview of how different composite methods and materials can be used to build surfboards. We’ll also be showing the equipment we have available here for your use at the facility and introduce you to the different short-courses we have for your access. I realize you guys might not be interested in surfboards, but some of the materials and methods may be similar to something you’re working on. We have a few students from a well known So. Cal. design school that come here to work on their projects because they don’t have to wait in line to use equipment.
Several surfboard material suppliers will be on hand showing everything from the basics to the latest in exotic foams and reinforcements. Some companies will be offering a discount to those who attend.
We have a lot of planned activity. If you’ve got a board you’re proud of and would like to show-it-off, we’re having a “best board contest”. Prizes will also be given out for other things like “furthest distance traveled” to attend.
If this event turns out like we think it will, we’d like to do more of these in the future (maybe even have a surfboard building class). We value your input. Let us know what speakers you’d like to hear, or what new techniques and materials you’d like to learn more about.
It’s your tax dollars that pay for this facility, so we’re here for you. If you want to learn some new techniques or just need a place to shape, glass or sand your board, we can accommodate your needs. This is a great neutral venue to have presentations from vendors as well as pro’s on current topics.
Also, we realize a lot of you live in other states and countries, so it will be difficult for you to attend. We want you all to know that you can call or e-mail us if you have any questions regarding composites.
Although this Seminar will be geared specifically towards surfboards, our facility has the equipment and materials available for any kind of project you can dream up. We’ve had students come to us with the whole spectrum of projects — everything from boats, snowboards, skimboards, car and motorcycle parts, architectural models, product prototypes, and so-on. So if you have other projects besides surfboards, you’ll get a good overview of the possibilities waiting for you at the Composites Training Center.
Hope you all can make it, should be fun, as it will be good to meet all of you for a face-to-face discussion. Give us a call if you can attend and we’ll get you a parking pass.
