Cerritos College Composite Construction Forum

So. Cal. Surfboard Construction Forum 2
Saturday, August 6th
9:00am - 3:00pm

Hello Everyone,

I just wanted to introduce myself again. I’m Terry Price, Director of the Composite Training Center at Cerritos College.

I realize that this message board isn’t about surfboards, but a lot of the materials and techniques can be applied to other projects. Also, we’d be happy to help you with any specific project that you might have.

This will be our second surfboard construction forum and this time we will be concentrating on more advanced techniques and materials, but we will still cover the basics if there are any beginners.

Here is what we have scheduled so far:

9:00 am - Resin Infusion Demonstration
We will be showing how to use RTM to glass both sides of a board at once as well as foam core fins and fin panels.

10:00 am - Several surfboard material suppliers will be on hand showing everything from the basics to the latest in exotic foams and reinforcements.

10:15 am - Greg Loehr from Resin Research
Greg will be doing a presentation on his epoxy resin. He will show a demonstration by glassing a board with his resin.

12:00 pm - BBQ Lunch

1:00 pm - Ken Ebert from Segway Composites
Ken will be presenting his hollow carbon fiber surfboards.

1:30 pm - Tour of composites department
I will be giving a tour of our facility, showing the equipment and materials available to our students.

2:00 pm - Hands on demonstrations
Here is where you can try out any of the many different methods, such as:
Hot wire foam cutting
Vacuum bagging
Wet lay-up
Prepregs
Water jet cutting
and anything else that we have available.

During this time you will also be able ask questions with all the presenters.

2:30 pm - Surfboard contest
Trophies will be awarded. I’ll post again with the various categories.

Everyone that attends will receive a certificate of attendance, and we will have a drawing where we give away some free classes. Also, we will have a questionaire where you can request discussion topics and presenters for future seminars.

It’s your tax dollars that pay for this facility, so we’re here for you. If you want to learn some new techniques or just need a place to shape, glass or sand your board, we can accommodate your needs. This is a great neutral venue to have presentations from vendors as well as pro’s on current topics.

Although this Seminar will be geared specifically towards surfboards, our facility has the equipment and materials available for any kind of project you can dream up. We’ve had students come to us with the whole spectrum of projects — everything from boats, snowboards, skimboards, car and motorcycle parts, architectural models, product prototypes, and so on. So if you have other projects besides surfboards, you’ll get a good overview of the possibilities waiting for you at the Composites Training Center.

Hope you all can make it, should be fun, as it will be good to meet all of you for a face-to-face discussion. Give us a call if you can attend and we’ll get you a parking pass.

Best regards,
Terry Price

Hi Terry,
The open house we just had was a great success. Cerritos College rocks.
I would like to figure out a way to get more people aware of your classes, especially the surfboard class.
Injection Molding is great, and carbon fiber composites.
Dan and Mickey want to send their thanks for a job well done.
Remember: UCLA: University of Cerritos, Left on Alondra.
