masturbation vs. sex
just kidding
or am I?
I agree with Yo- the success in your research will be in:
-framing the question to understand motivations and qualities, rather than catagories or definitions.
-understanding the relationship of art, design, and craft through history.
In addition, I’d suggest directly interviewing people whose work seems to fall into both art and design. I’d suggest that you email Maartin Baas- you will be surprised what he comes back with. They may say that they don’t think about it- they are being polite. Trust me, they are, and can give some good places to start. You will also find many to be more approachable than you think.
Thanks Jimr, Luckily my friend worked for Maarten last year, and so I met up with him when he was in London for his exhibition opening at the design museum, so was able to get an interview and schmooze with other designers there, I met todd Bracher and contacted him afterwards to get more of an industrial designers opion, he wasnt so helpful, never heard back!
Is there anyone else you can think of that is a helpful person to speak to?
I agree with good art producing emotion and appeal. My definition of art is an image or a visual representation of an idea, that results in greater enjoyment to a viewer than the sum of it’s parts.
I hadn’t considered how this may be relevant to design. Maybe the definition of design is a solution to a problem, that results in greater enjoyment to all users than the sum of it’s parts.
The difference between art and design is the same as differentiating between creativity and innovation.
There are pleanty of creative ideas out there, but they are not innovative. By that, I mean innovation is widely believed to be defined as the application of creativity to solve a problem and ultimately generate profits.
As a designer, my personal opinions and desires are far outweighed by the needs of the hundreds or thousands of consumers who ulitmately buy a product I design and generate revenue for that product. Their needs come first in my design process.
Artists are more concerned about self expression through whatever medium they chose to communicate through. Just because their creation didn’t generate mass appeal doesn’t mean it was not art.
