breaking in

I know this belongs in the portfolio section, but since im looking to be a footwear designer I figured i would post here as well.

I have been out of school for a little while now, still trying to break into the industry. I have recently finished a new version of my protfolio website. The goal of this site is to showcase my abilities in hopes of finding an industry job (preferably footwear or sporting goods but im open to anything). Any comments or criticisms about my work or the site in general would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

i am in the same situation, trying to get the proverbial foot in the door…

your site is really clean & to the point, i guess you could show more sketches and it would be tight if you showed more renders of the row shell(or just more renderings in general). good stuff

good luck out here!

Nick

There is some good stuff in there, but what your showing seems to lack spice. I think you can make more memorable projects. Projects that say “we want that guy on our team”

Browse through some of the coroflot footwear folios like:

Each has a lot of personality. Maybe start with some bench marking and go from there. When I got out, I pretty much had to redo all of my portfolio projects because “I got it” too late in the game.

Everything you put up there should communicate who you are, what you believe in, and what you want to be doing. Anything that doesn’t show that, axe it. I hope this isn’t too much. It takes guts to post your stuff up and ask for honest feedback.

yo

I’m a little hurt you didnt inlcude me in your spicy top 10…still looking out the window everytime fedex drives by…

thanks guys for the valuble feed back. Are there any of my projects that you see as being on point that i can compare my other projects too, or any that completely miss the boat? i greatly appreciate the feed back and am willing to step up any part of my design game to get that job.

Nice to see a fellow SCAD grad on the board. Your stuff looks nice but I agree with Yo. Try to add so of you personality into your portfolio. What makes you tick and what is it about your work that makes me want you. Also try to tell a story with each project. You have started doing that with the Kid shoes but you ar lacking that with the high chair, the ATV, and the crew boat. I would also like to your process a little more.

All in all it looks great. Keep us updated with changes.

more sketches please. big disappointment the sketch section is not up yet, and i would also include sketching on all projects.

one of my biggest beefs with portfolios (even seasoned pros) is too much focus on the final beauty shot. Without showing what you actually contributed (technical design of molds, sketches, pattern review, etc.) it is difficult for a potential employer to judge what you actually did and what your skills are.

if you are interested in footwear, i would also encourage you to develop some personal proejcts. lots of portfolios of young designers i have seen who dont actually have much experience DO have lots of work for kicksguide competitions, etc. This shows your enthusiasm and also helps show your skills beyond any work you may have done in a short internship, etc.

keep up the hard work! The shoe industry may be hard to break into, but once you are in its very rewarding and fun to be in such a small, creative, dynamic “club”.

THis is great advice - spot on.

I’m sorry dude, its been rare I’ve been home for more than a couple of days lately

Vegas for WSA >>> LA >>> SF to meet with retailers >>>Austin at the IDSA national>>>just got back from a superbike race in Columbus >>> jumping on a plane at 5am to go see relatives for a week and relax for a week… pretty much every minute I have been home I’ve been cranking out concepts, techpacks, and revision… or been on here

I’m sorry I didn’t post you stuff, I just copied the first bunch in no order out of my faves…
