books on manufacturing techniques

hi,
i’m planning on starting the art institute of chicago’s master of design in designed objects program in about a month, and wanted to do some background reading on various manufacturing techniques (i’m coming from a totally different field). does anyone have any recommendations?

i’m thinking smaller scale than automotive…

thanks,
ajp

Industrial Design: Materials and Manufacturing by Jim Lesko

Making It: Manufacturing Techniques for Product Design by Chris Lefteri

both good…

Materials and Design by Mike Ashby is a great one… Ashby is a professor at Cambridge and the Royal College of Art. It’s quite thorough.

Chris Lefteris books are better for choosing materials rather than finding out about processes (Lefteri was a tutor of mine).

i forgot about the ashby text… thats a great book, like you said covers everything
