Are there entry level jobs in ID?

I think a BS in Industrial Design is more of what you’re looking for as it at least includes physics and seems more function oriented vs. raw design. Personally, I think there should be a bigger split between a BA and BS in Industrial Design as I feel many firms have a very strong association with one or the other i.e. premium art furniture designers would want a BA whereas a kitchen appliance company would want a BS.

i disagree, here in europe, bs or ba doesn´t have anything to with what is taught. nearly all of the design programs are ba. also, i havent seen one msc, only ma´s

regards.

Again, in terms of employability, if it’s a design job, BA/BS doesn’t matter. It’s about your portfolio.

In Australia the degree is just a bachelor of industrial design. Art and technical were included as well as some business and project management topics and a lot of design and architecture history.

I’m now working in house designing products made from brass aluminium etc which was a straight from uni job as the only designer in house. I think employers often just want the best bang for their buck. I came out of uni knowing how to sketch, 3d model and with good general understanding of most materials and processes. Now after a year I am building up my knowledge on the processes and materials we use here.

I think you just need a good portfolio tailored to the job you are going for and if you’re bored - sketch stuff and try to fix broken stuff around your house or for your parents and relatives. I’ve learned a bucket load by just pulling gadgets apart and fixing them. Taps, door latches, car doors, mobile (cell) phones, guitars, watches, air conditioners, water purifiers, curtain rails, etc etc etc.

I would say know specifically what type of ID you want to go into, and which industry. The more you narrow it down, the specific you can be when applying for a job. If I look at a resume that tells me nothing of what that person is interested in, it is no help in deciding if they would be a good fit. And yes, there are entry level positions in ID, you just need to keep looking.
