Hi! I’m an Industrial Designer, 4th year college and will be taking my thesis next term. I’m having a hard time thinking of a perfect topic for my thesis. It so hard because a lot are existing already and I’m running out of ideas. Suggestions, or websites that can help me, advice on how I can make my imagination work, enlighten me, inspire me! That might help!
You people might say “Try to be observant, that will inspire you.”, “Read the news paper.”, “Think of a product and its problem, then come out something much better.” Helpful but not so much, I need more advice! Give me problems to solve THANK YOU!

Not really sure what you would like us to tell you.
W e cannot tell you what to design. That is up to you. We do not know your strengths, weaknesses, interests, etc…Do a search on this topic it has come up quite a few times. Like you mentioned in your post you should do something that you are interested in. Also pick a topic that you feel really needs to be solved. By doing this you will be able to keep your focus and stay on track.
Do something that interests you personally. Maybe a hobby that you have lots of experience with. A friend of mine did his thesis on the dynamics of flight of frisbee golf discs (Aerospace Engineering thesis, but…) because he was an avid disc golfer. Got him into Grad school and good employment.
Medical errors kill up to 100,000 Americans every year. Thats more than highway accidents, breast cancer or AIDS.
In fact, that’s the equivalent of a jumbo jet crashing and killing 280 every single day. Surprised? Most are.
This is an epic design problem, and there are literally a handfull of designers working on it.
We need more.
The key opportunity areas in order of priority are:
Drug reactions/negative drug effects
Hospital acquired infections (many are ventilator acquired, but handwashing is still a problem!)
This is a great suggestion. It could provide many many opportunities, from product design to redesigning the systems and strategies behind the problem. If you take this on and you get it right it could be a major portfolio piece and a show some really great skills. This is also a good one given the health care issues going on in the US government at the moment.
Edit: Just wanted to add if you do decide to take this on think of it as more than just a product design issue. This is more a system issue than a product. Meaning what is it that causes the problem and what systems need to be put into place to stop those issues. don’t let this discourage you as I think cg will tell you this is all part of Medical ID.
