Andrew Kim - Sketching Thread

It’s been more than a week since my last upload so here is a sketch I did for fun.

Very nice - front looks a little bit droopy and that one random black part sticking out of the shadow on the right is a little distracting, but nice stuff. The wheels look much better on that one and I like how you faded out the back slightly.

Thanks Cyberdemon, I took your suggestion on improving the wheels into much consideration. It still needs some work but I’m guessing that practice will make perfect.

Here’s another sketch:

BTW, I’ve recently designed a new logo/crest for my highschool. It’s not completely finished, but pretty polished right now. Here it is for those interested:

logo’s pretty balling. i like the flats more than the 3d versions. those seem too car-badgey.

Damn you and your inexplicabily developed skillset!

That is a pretty dope high school logo. Great job.

Watch the proportions on those cars. The renderings are great, but the proportions are very toy like right now. Also, try some more informative views, turn it to the side a bit more.

you seem to like huge wheels.looks great though unrealizable.

I don’t have a problem with the big wheels - I think most car designers tend to blow out the wheel proportions.

I think the “Cartoon-ness” is coming from the fact that the shading is done in coarse steps, rather than smooth gradations. It gives them a cartoon/cel-shaded look, rather then a smooth metallic finish.

If you just threw down smooth gradations with a big airbrush it would probably be a bit more convincing, but all things considered the drawings are still communicating the form and design intent pretty well.

and still I think that a designer might draw everything proportional to be realistic and natural.

logo is amazing, very clever. not sure about flipping a logo upside down though, especially a crest…It is considered disrespectful to display a flag or logo incorrectly…

I don’t think he’s proposing turning it upside down, just doing that to reveal the rose within the Griffin.

WOW, great stuff, can’t wait to see more of your work.

Great stuff Andrew! You’re not even in college yet right? Have you decided where you’ll be going?

Thanks for the replies guys. I tried making the car more metallic this time. I also tried to make the design less conservative. I’m kinda sick of cars right now so I’ll be sticking to ID for a while. After all, I’ll be majoring in product design. Thanks for the help so far!

@designfabulous I was just trying to dig up some of your old threads to show a middle school student in Asia something to aspire to but unfortunately it seems like all of your images have expired! I remember these threads were really inspiring.

Wow I remember this. Had to look up what he’s up to now. Looks like a very nice tech career (MS, Apple, Tesla) but surprisingly not Samsung as all his viral projects were iirc.

He has gone on to do some great stuff! We hired him as an intern when he was still on school and I was Creative Director at frog. @designfabulous was so prolific, would love to hear his thoughts on the industry and see him start to teach the next generation!
