Let’s see, it’s not level to the page. Sometimes the text crosses over the drawing. The size is not consistent and it is not justified to the left or right. My old college professor would have taken this drawing down of the wall and ripped it in half just for the handwriting!
It’s an opportunity to improve. This, and capitalizing your I’s, is one of the easiest things to get better at.
Ok I am going to have to stick up for the OP here. I agree with you Mike on the left or right justification and I would say that to the OP you need to write in a straight line, but I have never been a big fan of this designer handwriting stuff. I don’t write in all caps. When I try it looks like crap, but I have my own style of caps and lower case. I like most of us seasoned vets have taken those lettering classes. I learned a lot, but there is something about your natural handwriting that is part of you and your personality. When you try to change it, it shows as being uncoforable. Which is what we see here.
I challenge the OP to show us his/her natural handwriting. If we feel it is off, then ther may need to be a change or a need to work on it, but just trying to change your handwriting to be cool…I don’t see the value.
BTW…your sketches are getting better. Keep it up!! I want to see more!! You should be posting at least 4-5 pages a day!! And those are just the onesyou show us. Sketch AT LEAST 2 hours a day. Right now I am only seeing 1 every few days.
Well I’m not going to let all the educating comments you guys have provided go without any recognition so thank you for your advice, input, and encouragement.
So far, I have definitely done a half-ass job at 3 sketches a day. Naturally I would like to provide reasons and what not but as you guys have been saying, less talking more sketching. Despite it appearing as if I am just another person with a goal and no strength behind my word, I won’t say more and will simply post when I have sketched. The goal remains, 3 sketches a day
PackageID: I will post my handwriting tomorrow some time. Lately I have been sketching well over 2 hours a day, but it has been spent on my portfolio sketches. Afterwards, I sometimes don’t have the drive although that cannot be an excuse as I allow it to be more often then not.
P.S. I really do appreciate the conversations and theory being discussed here.
As long as it is clear and makes the sketch look better, not worse, it doesn’t matter. The architect style is one way of doing this, and it works, so if you can do it there no need to reinvent the wheel.
wow, its beeen sooo long since i’ve loooked at this thread. Since I started this thread, i’ve put together a portfolio for Art Center, gotten in, endured my first and possibly roughest term, and now in the middle of my second. Anyway, started a blogspot. I use it to post my fun sketches, and then some school stuff. Literally just started it so, enjoy what you can, and unlike this thread that was going to have “3 sketches a day”, i’ll be posting very regularly.
So this is how I learned to write well from a professional graffiti artist, grab massive sized paper use something very light to write with first and write the alphabet as big as you can then write random words whatever you like as big as you can so that it fits on the page. Once you’ve written enough words so you can’t see what your writing anymore use a darker tool like a pen and keep writing on that same page to not waste too much paper. When your done with the pen use the same page to practice your circles and ellipses with an even thicker tool like a marker so you can see it. Did this for 2 hours every day for months. If you do the same I guarantee you’ll start writing like an expert. Do it more intensely, and no doubt you’ll write like a pro within the year. Eventually when you get great at it you won’t even need line paper to write straight it will be natural to you, you can just write straight on blank sketching pages.
